Dinan Intercooler & Oil Cooler

Does anyone use Dinan's intercooler and/or oil cooler? How is your experience with them? What alternatives are there for the oil cooler?

I've personally never experienced them, but I can tell you one thing. There are better options out there which are more reasonably priced than Dinan.

Are you going to track your car? If not, a good combo that's reasonably priced is the CP-e intercooler + oil cooler. The intercooler will be good for track days also, but the oil cooler should be more than sufficient for street driving and spirited canyon runs.

If you're thinking about tracking the car, a good solution would be the Evolution Racewerks Sport Oil Cooler or even better yet, the Competition Oil Coolers. A couple of people had problems installing them, but they do their job quite well. I'm about to install my ER Competition Oil Coolers next week.

As for other brands, I cannot speak of as I haven't owned them.

I have seen logs with Dinan intercooler. It is not a bad product but for the price i think you can get a better one.

price aside, they make solid products. They warranty match with new cars and for non warranty cars they offer a 2 year transferable unlimited mileage warranty for the product.

I have a dinan car and a bunch of their stuff on my 1series and it is all good. Their tunes are not as aggressive as other companies but they are good.

Anyone planning on installing an aftermarket oil cooler with AN-10 fittings should seriously consider getting proper oil lines made up with permanent (crimped) fittings. The pretty re-useable fittings suck. The fittings themselves aren't the issue, but it's how they press into the hoses. I've had two hoses split at the fitting. One hose developed a slow drip near the oil cooler which was caught in time. When I discovered the leak I replaced both hoses and six months later one of the hoses snapped off at the oil filter housing. Talk about a mess! I was lucky in that I was able to shut the car down immediately and pull to the side of the road (so no damage to the bearings, etc.). It would have been a disaster had I been on a 4 lane highway. I've order hoses from these guys, and they seem bullet proof...

Thanks. No tracking plans, maybe the occasional mt/canyon road as you say or autocross and 1/8 mi drag... Just wanted a mild cooling upgrade for more consistency. I'll take a look at the CP-e. Sounds like it would be a good solution.

I'm not familiar with the fittings. Are they the stock units?

If you are not going to track your car get VRSF or AA Sport.
If you have the budget for it, Evolution Racewerks is a really good option as well.

The video below show the installation of reuseable AN10 hose fittings. The issue with reuseable fittings (from my experience) is how they form the seal between the hose and the fitting. The seal is created by pushing/screwing the fitting into the hose creating an outward pressure against the collar. So the fitting is designed to expand the hose from the inside out. Picture shoving the tip of a pencil into the end of a straw. The straw expands outward. The problem is that the expansion occurs at the weakest point in the straw/hose... at its end. Eventually this outward pressure (coupled with heat cycling, engine movement , fluctuations in oil pressure, etc.) will cause the hose to split. A crimp fitting seals the hose to the fitting by compressing the hose from the outside. In addition, most crimps put equal pressure down the length of the fitting, or at points before the hose end. You will notice that the OE hose lines use permanent crimp fittings. Not only is this cheaper (if you have the crimping press) but it's also less likely to fail. Also, many after market crimps are made from brass which allows for a bit more thermal expansion during heat cycles which puts less stress on the hose.

I use Dinans intercooler and have been very happy with it. I noticed an immediate improvement in how hard the car pulls and quicker turbo response. I should note i got it on sale for $850 about a year ago before they raised the price to $1200. Are you planning to use Dinan software? If not I would agree with others that there are cheaper options available, especially with the price hike. I will say, FWIW, I had the connecting hose blow off the turbo side of the intercooler and my dealer replaced the hose and fittings under warranty without any questions asked.

Bottom line, no pun intended, with Dinan is you are clearly paying for the warranty in its pricing. There is no real road advantage in their products, especially considering their very high prices compared to the products that are at the top of the performance lists.

They have a recognized brand but don't appear at the top of any street/strip lists in actual performance. Anyone not interested in competitive level performance but a bit more than stock with a warranty should also consider the M-Sport products. A somewhat higher level of performance over pure stock with a one size fits all full factory warranty for less money.

The aftermarket still owns the $ per WHP arena by a wide margin.
