I think I'll wait for the full article to come out... but comparing his comments on the Ford and Lotus... erm, I dunno, different tastes for sure.

The Only magazine that gave the 1M bad reviews is MT. I truly belief they hate the car. So I don't care what they said, everybody else love the car.

Well, let's give InsideLine their due. The did place the 1M 2nd behind a Dodge Challenger SRT; because the real winner was determined between the numbers.

i would love to go have a go at that track in real life...my xbox 360 buttons are worn down a little, partially due to labs around laguna seca
i love that lil move around 1:52! maybe you're just giving it a little too much gas for that track!? if you complain about going too much sideways, ease the gas a little..sheesh! |

Don't forget what the Laguna Seca package actually adds to the 'regular' 302.
Now what would Randy do in a 'regular' street purpose 302? That's the more realistic question. http://www.ford.com/cars/mustang/2012mustangboss/ 2012 Mustang Boss® 302 Laguna Seca Package The 2012 Mustang Boss® 302 with Laguna Seca Package* adds elements like race-compound tires, an aggressive front air splitter and rear pedestal spoiler, standard Torsen differential and Recaro® seats, additional track gauges, and even deletes the rear seat and adds a rear cross-brace to save weight and add torsional rigidity. *Front air splitter included in Laguna Seca Package is intended for race track use only and is not legal for on-street driving. May degrade crash performance and void vehicle warranty. Must be installed by customer. Coming spring 2011. |

That write-up was scathing!
Did Kay Segler piss in Randy Pobst's cereal back in college?

And just to set my expectations of this comparison does "driver's car" = mostly track car? I just can't see the hate, unless it's being done to be contrary and against the grain, but to do that calls into question the reviewer's integrity. Again, that's if the intent is to generate controversy. Maybe too much hype and too much expectation for him? And I noticed in the little blurb comments, not every point of comparison is a direct comparison let alone compared on par.

Text is below. Definitely the most negative review thus far amongst almost universal positive acclaim otherwise. Has anyone else experienced the "lazy turn in" and mid corner understeer he refers to?
--------------------- RANDY POBST'S IMPRESSIONS On handling... "The 1M is an improvement on the 135, which I've spent some time in, but NOT my favorite car. In fact, between you and me, I hate this car. It won't turn. The thing I didn't like about the 135 was its mid-corner understeer, its reluctance to turn once it was in the corner, and the 1M still does that. And it's the primary thing I remember after driving the car. That it is very lazy on turn-in." On the transmission... "The shifter is slick, and light. I really enjoy that. You gotta do it just with your fingertips. If you try to muscle it with a fist, you're gonna get the wrong gear." On the seats... "I like the seats a lot, very comfortable and supportive, except...too high. I'm a tall guy; this reminds me a lot of the older Volvos or Range Rovers where they mount the seat really high so you can get a good view. Which is great, but I'm tall, I'm already high. I want to be down in the car. And I couldn't lower the seat enough, and I just felt like I was sitting on the car, not in the car, which I'm not a fan of." On the steering... "Steering, relatively slow ratio, which I actually like because I think everyone turns in too fast. I've always liked BMW for building that into their cars. I just didn't like what happened with the handling as I turned the wheel, there was just not enough response entering the corner. And braking hard made it worse. A lot worse. I mean, that car would go straight if I was in the brakes very hard at all. So, I found it very disappointing." On the engine... "The engine is smooth, the power is reasonably good, but in today's world, that's not a fast car. I'm telling ya, it is not a fast car in today's world. Maybe because I've just spent too much time in 500-horsepower cars." Overall... "It's almost like it was built by safety engineers. But only until you get on the power, and then, getting on the power, it's not really good at putting the power down, either. I'm just not impressed with this car. I like the M3 so much that I find the 1M to be very, very disappointing, though the M3 understeers too much, too. I think the lawyers are running the handling department at BMW right now, and they don't have to. Just make it handle like the 1988 M3 did -- that car was perfect. You know, I hate to pick on what is obviously overall is a pretty good car, but in today's world there are not very many cars I hate...I hate this car." |

You can't expect everyone to love the car. I'm just glad that he and his opinion of the car are part of a VERY small minority.
As for the track lap times, I can't say i'm terribly surprised. I somewhat expected the Cayman and Evora to be a bit quicker on the track. And if, in fact, the Mustang they tested has the Laguna Seca package with the R-compound tires, then I would totally expect it to be faster on a track, tires make a HUGE difference.

I think unless you are a racecar driver or one that tracks their car on a monthly basis, you won't be able to experience what he dislikes about the car in terms of handling and braking so it shouldn't deter 99 percent of the people on these forums if they are thinking of purchasing the 1M.
