It is a parts bin "M-car".

It just doesn't have the same amount of R&D behind it as other M vehicles.

Doesn't make it a bad car, just the facts.

It's sad to see that for the same price and currency conversion, a 1series m from the states cost as much as a 135i in Canada. Canadians are paying way too much for our cars T_T

While I understand that frustration on the surface, the truth is that volume matters. It's cheaper to do business when your sales are greater by an order of magnitude.

2010 BMW Group Canada Sales (BMW + Mini): 31,703

You forgot about the M3 suspension and LSD.

And M3 brakes and . . . torque

On overboost, 369lb-ft (500N-m) . . . same as my E39 M5 but over a broader rpm range and with what, 750 fewer lbs weight? Can't see how that's a bad thing, especially if you drive on the street ever.

Ouch and i thought nearly £48000 for my 1M with a maintenance package (which is free in USA) was expensive

This car is as M worthy as any other M car. Let's see: M3 chassis and suspension, M3 brakes and comp. package wheels, M3 LSD, wider track than a regular 135i, and BMW themselves labeled it an M car. Who are we to say otherwise?!?

For the guy who said not enough r&d, what better than the 4 years of real life testing the power plant has been exposed to? Also, many of the major components are coming from the M3 which has definitely undergone plenty of r&d.

Well said. The biggest difference seems to be the limited production. Anyone can buy an m3, the 1M seems to be much more difficult to acquire.

rethink your ideology; many former/current //M owners found/find themselves purchasing S/Cs and Turbos.
I need to remind you that the first //M car was a turbocharged: //M1 and that was a diehard //M car.

I hate to say I never thought of this myself... I've seen so many threads where prices have been mentioned and some even accused BMW of price guoging certain countries.... thanks for pointing out the pink elephant in the room.. .. when it comes to sales....volume is king.

Compared to other markets, Canadian prices are not too bad. Thankfully we have a huge consumer to the south of us which puts pressure on our vendors to keep prices relatively competitive. Generally Canadian models will come with more options as standard to try and make up some of the difference.

BTY...China is not far from eclipsing the US as the largest export market for BMW.

OT...As I type this I wonder why the US never adopted the metric system...
