135i Evolve remap done today

Following the general lack of interest in my 135i remap group buy, I thought I'd pop over to see Evolve today as they are only twenty minutes from me and frankly I was bored of waiting for more people to get interested! Of course, the inevitable happened and I came away with a remapped car

I'll let the graph speak for itself in terms of the numbers other than to say green is "before" and red is "after" With the remap, the car feels absolutely great. Transformed is the wrong word in a way, because it retains all the driveability of the car as it was stock - there is just more go, a lot more go in fact, in any gear, at any rpm. Midrange pull is very entertaining, a thoughtful right foot is absolutely needed in 1st and 2nd to avoid wheelspin and at <cough> higher speeds the car is transformed. I imagine that pulling from say 90 to 120 in 6th it would probably feel like a completely different car

The (very friendly and knowledgeable) guys at Evolve reckon this might be the first MSD81 ECU'd car to have an ODB remap in the country....

We discussed 1addicts whilst I was there and the subject of a forum discount (I've abandoned group buys - too much like hard work!). Evolve are offering 1addicts members the 135i remap for £599 inc VAT, with before and after dyno runs if requested for an additional £50. If you want to contact Evolve they are on 0870 0850 111 or info@evolveyourcar.com.

Once I've had a chance to do some more driving I'll post some more thoughts - 130 mile round trip to the office tomorrow should be fun though!

Evolve's forum rate is also valid for 335i remaps apparently

Is this the same remap that they were asking £900 a month ago ?

That was the other lot wasn't it?

I was going to give Evolve a ring about this remap. clived, was there any mention about if this is going to be a straightforward thing for BMW to pick up on?

I've no issue with "paying to play" as it were, and if my actions by getting a remap were directly responsible for buggering something up, then I'm happy to pay for it. But my suspicion is that they'd most likely try to deny warranty repairs at the slightest sign of anything they can connect to a remap.

Nice healthy torque increase too, as you're running 375lbft+ from 2.5-5k.

Incidentally, how long did it take?

Strange thing is I just phoned them and they said they are the only ppl who can do ECU maps for the 135i in the UK. Somewhere someone is telling porkies....

Evolve also said they would reflash if the garage wiped the map.

I maybe looking to these guys after Christmas to get mine done.

I think they might be talking about being the only folks who can map a MSD81 ECU'd car via ODB.

So far as "detectablity" goes - obviously, they can just drive it ;-) but as far as I understand it, a dealership does not have the capability to read the engine mapping file from an ECU - it would have to go back to Germany for that.

What formula are they using to determine flywheel HP/Torque? From the look of it, they performed a baseline (pretune) pull, and set the drivetrain loss so that your baseline came out to ~300HP. (Or was there a different method they used?)

Hi Guys

I have joined up to save Clive from answering all the questions. I have emailed the site asking about advertising but have not had a response. If one of the mods/admins wants to email me that would that would great.

I forgot there is one (AFAIK) other company (P-Torque) that can do both MSD80/81 ECU variants in the UK. Sorry for the mix up. Am suffering from flu which makes me forgetful. Clive got rid of a virus on one of our computers yesterday but did not mention it would transfer to me.

The Flywheel/torque figure is calculated by the Dyno Dynamics software. When we put the Dyno into shoot out mode we have no control over the parameters. I appreciate in the US its all about RWHP figures but in the UK people are more comfortable with Flywheel figures.

I will post RWHP figures later on.

Imran, I may well be up your way to come and see you pretty soonish.

I had a chat to Razia and clived certainly seems pleased. I'm off to Thailand on Friday, but once I'm back in mid-Nov I'll probably give you a shout.

I much prefer the option of an OBD remap rather than fitting a piggyback, despite the slightly lower outputs. And I definitely want more power now that I've had the car for 6 weeks!

MattD, Good luck in Thailand, excellent place. They drive like insane nutters out there.

I am still trying to work out wether the ECU gives better gains than the superchip I have fitted. Superchip quotes 39Bhp increase (at wheel), the ECU I am still waiting to hear.
Guess I will have to dyno before deciding.

It looks like clived got 74bhp, with a nice uplift across a big portion of the range.

We're doing a bit of driving up in the north in a Toyota Hilux crew cab 4x4 around the Mae Hong Son loop or something. Should be an interesting change from the 135i. Thank God there's no driving to be done in Bangkok though!

Here is a graph of clived's car showing the same runs as the flywheel graph in the first post.

Superchips (who use the SSTT for the x35i) gains are quoted at the fly not the wheels. If you look at their graphs for the x35i it says standard 305 BHP Superchipped 343 BHP.

Our ECU flash gave 64 BHP at the wheels on Clives car. There is a significant difference between the 2.

Hi Matt - its a small world. Razia (my aunt!!) was suprised that someone she worked with had heard of evolve. Bloody Porsche drivers....

Look forward to hearing from you when you get back. Have a great time.

Come on clived, let's hear how that drive back from the office was!

I've now got my brother on my back telling me to get it done before Christmas, so that he can have a crack when we're both back at my parents place. I'm sure he sees it as some sort of recompense for me not having the car when he came up to visit in September after it got delayed by a week! Maybe it might persuade him not to go for the TTS he was going to order.

My well intentioned plan to wait six months before doing anything looks to be slipping away...

The drive BACK from the office was a nightmare - M4, A404, M25, A1 all covered in snow and I discovered how easily the 1's front lights get covered in a blanket of the stuff, resulting in minimal light output. So between the complete lack of grip and the no light, the journey back was boring, in a scary kind of way.

The journey TO work however was much more fun The two things I've noticed so far are a) a simple large increase in grunt all across the range and b) what feels like much sharper throttle response - like say high-ish revs in 2nd on a balanced throttle, if you floor it, then BAMMM - instant thrust!

Doesn't sound much fun on the way home then! I suppose some washer fluid in the reservoir and a quick spray on the lights should help?

Of course, with all that extra power a nice empty wide road would have been good for a bit tail out fun! Not so suitable for the M25 unfortunately

Nope, didn't help at all - I was actually quite concerned how easily the headlights becaome completely and deeply covered in a thick blanket of snow. None of the other cars I saw out seemed to be having the same problem. I actually thought my lights had broken somehow. Must be some sort of airflow issue maybe?

Please explain the sudden drop out at just under 6.5k rpm ?

Quick question... what's the estimated at the wheel power of the SSTT / Superchips - I thought it was 350bhp?

Is the Evolve remap completely undetectable?

That's what happens when you take your foot off the accelerator! You may have noticed a similar effect on the road ;-)

There is no point trying to bounce off the limiter on the dyno - once you're past peak power, what's the point?
