Uh, yeah, it's pretty much just the motor that's different. Oh, and the car payment.

And I guess you couldn't pony up for a better car either, huh?

To each their own is exactly the point.

With the money not spent on going up-market like youreself I have been slumming around Europe in my downmarket "okay BMW". Is there such a thing as a down market BMW?

I do however, wish I had the sports package because being limited to 137 miles per hour is so slow.

Sooo...

No one seen the /sarcasm on the end of my post?

I was going to buy an M3... too big. I feel just at home in my 135i, thank you. I also have nothing against the 128, with the exception of those who own them and make rediculous comments about the 135i. I feel the need to make stupid comments in return.

Saying that the 135i is comparably unreliable, expensive/more annoying to maintain, heavier, and has poor power delivery is hardly ridiculous. It's simply the truth.

Right... Because 128's are so much faster around the track, less expensive to maintain, and the power delivery is a whole hell of a lot better than a 135.

A 135i is not the fastest thing around a track, so what's your point? No matter how much you spend on a car, you always could've spent more and gotten more. At the end of the day, we spend as much as we care to.

I'm not a professional race car driver, so why do I really need the extra power of the 135i on the track anyway? So that I can brag to strangers on the internet? I find the 128i to be plenty of fun at the track. If it makes you feel better to own a 135i, and that feeling is worth the thousands of dollars extra, then so be it. It wasn't worth it to me.

In any case, my lowly 128i, mods and all, is paid off. How about you?

Unfortunatly the OP purchsed a car that has most likely not been very well maintained or has seen to many short run cycles (hence the vanos issue). BTW both engines will require vanos sensors and seals at some point. I am not too sure what may have caused the blow out valve to malfunction so early. I am willing to bet it is equipped with the automatic.

Suspension wise the cars are pratically identical. N52 equipped cars are faster through the corner due to the penality of an additional 160 pounds over the front axle the N54/55 pays.

Of course, once we pull out on to the straight the N54/55 begins to walk away. On a hot day after about 15 mins the N52 moves closer due to heat sink unless the N54 is modded (larger intercooler, meth?, oil cooler ect ect ect). I would dare say a 128 equipped with a proper limited slip would give a 135i a run for his money. The percieved lack of HP causes me to focus on keeping the car above 4K RPM where she is happy. With no reserve of power if I screw something up I pay a larger penalty. The 128i around a track is a momentum car. But, who really drives like that on the street?

It's all conjecture really. If your old school like some of us, the N52 is the last of the great naturally aspirated in line six cylinder engines. In European form (130i) it can produce close to 300hp (assuming ROZ 98 fuel) and pound for pound produces more HP than any other naturally aspirated engine BMW has developed. The reliablity across the fleet has been above average on top of everything else.

Title in hand on mine. To each their own though, as Ive tried saying before. I have already said there was nothing wrong with the 128, but some feel the need to make stupid comments towards the 135 in order to justify their 128 purchase. I wanted a nice daily deliver that was semi-luxury and had enough power down low to easily get through traffic all while enjoying the occasional track day. I think I accomplished that very well...with a stock 135i and a COBB AP.

I'll keep lapping while you wait for things to cool down.

And yes, the 128i is significantly less expensive to maintain. And a linear power delivery usually is favored.

What "stupid comments?" The only one that I've seen is from the guy who said that the 135i was the "enthusiast's choice" or some such thing, which I think is kind of ridiculous. So you don't get to be a car guy if you don't want to spend $45k-$50k on a car?

It goes both ways. Not labeling all 128 drivers out to be biased toward the 128 (and vice versa for the 135 guys), neither am I saying he was right for saying that either. I really cant see why a forum full of enthusiaast from all car platforms cant just have a friendly conversation without having to make stupid comments. it comes from both sides.

You mistakenly focused on NA, lightweight, RWD, and a MT.

Oh boy.

I hope that others don't view 128i drivers as being financially unable to "pony up" money for a 135i because that was the sense I got in some of these posts. That would be like saying Warren Buffett is poor because he drives his dad's really old car from the 1960s.

Everyone values cars differently and to say that one person is unable to "pony up" additional money for a 135i just because they drive a 128i seems ridiculous to me.

..but I guess it's all about image nowadays right..?

I can pony up to anything...and as BMW enthusiast, I chose and love my 128. This forum is heavily biased toward the 135. Most of us 128 owners have found a safe haven in the 128 engine section. Read the regrets thread: plenty of 128 owners that are completely satisfied with their choice and I am sure that a majority of owners could have ponied up for a 135, and some couldn't: who cares. A 135 owner who comes in to our 'safe haven' and trashes on our beloved 128 is bound to get negative comments. Would you expect anything else? The HPFP issue is real and I am glad I don't have to worry about it.

PS. I love my 318Ti too.. it corners better than my 128.

This. Yet inevitably someone comments about how we're being overly sensitive or something. All I know is that I have never gone over to the the 135i sub-forum and trash-talked their car.

Yup, sold the M5 for this. 135 was certainly within the budget, but definitely not on the list.
