Wear on door from elbow... way to fix?
Hi all,
I've been driving with my elbow resting on the door below the glass on the plastic for a while now and am starting to see a circular discoloration from where my elbow sits. Almost looks like someone took some sandpaper to the area. I had just wondered if anyone has experienced anything similar and if so, any idea if I could fix this short of replacing the panel? Thanks in advance. |

Take a pic it will help.
Normally its just elbow gunk which you can take a polisher with a brush and poloish it off but wont know until we can have a look at the picture.

It could just be body oils. Try putting some Lemon Pledge on an old cotton t-shirt and rubbing the area. I Lemon Pledge all the non-leather interior surfaces 3-4 times a year when I Lexol the leather.

Best thing to do would be to use a leather cleaner and a boars hair brush. A soft toothbrush would work as well. Apply a small amount of cleaner and work it into the affected area in small concentric circles to agitate the dirt and oils. This will work the leather cleaner into a lather. That should lift the stain. I use Lexol leather cleaner but almost anything should work.

I'd try some Einszett Cockpit Premium or Einszett Plastic Deep Cleaner (lil stronger) as I'm not 100% sure since my car has leatherette but that's not leather there, right? That stuff cleans pretty well and leaves it completely matte and looking like it's from the factory as oppose to some other stuff that may make things shiny or slick. My 2 cents.

That's hardly the right product for vinyl/leatherette.

A good leather cleaner should take care of it. I may be crucified but I usually clean the vinyl (doors and dash) with a rag damped with windex...

Try it, you will be surprised. It works great on vinyl/leatherette and leather as well. I have a 23 year old leather recliner which I Lemon Pledge once a month. Looks better than new. I use Lexol on the car's leather since it seems to keep the leather more supple in the winter.

I use a vinyl cleaner, I think it's name contains 404 or something like that. But the key change to get my mark out of the arm rest was to use a brush. The vinyl is deeply enough figured that a cloth would not take all the junk out of it. With the brush, it is easily cleaned.

I used some leather conditioner I had laying around and just buffed it out, using a soft bristle brush to get into the grooves, it looks fine now. I wasn't sure if buffing further would make it worse so I'm glad I asked.
Thanks for all the suggestions, and I suppose the commentary on my having "gnarley-ass" elbows. I will, however, not begin pumicing, loofahing, massaging, moisturizing, or doing any of that other "spa day" stuff to them. |
