Got the new turbo 4 as a loaner today...
Although I hate to admit it the turbo 4 is pretty good. Doesnt sound as good as the 135i, but its the best sounding 4 out there. Power is definitely good.
Looks are subjective, but I think the front end looks good. The side view and rear are pretty dull. Interior is very nice and comfortable, this one was loaded with all the goodies. The run flats in this car were some of the worst I have ever heard. They were so loud I had to turn the stereo up to drown them out. The steering is just weird. I hate electric steering with a passion. Its feel completely disconnected with fake feedback. The start/stop in this car is pretty rough and very noticeable. I turned it off. |

Yeah... I had a 328i Loaner a couple of weeks back... It is a very nice engine but I think it's a little weak for a car the size of a 3er... that could just be because I stepped out of my 135i 5 minutes before though
I agree about the steering... It's like using an xbox/playstation wheel with the force-feedback turned off. Very disconcerting... I didn't get to experience the Stop/Start because I turned it off before pulling away every time I drove the car... The one I had didn't have the M Sport kit and the combination of the big rubber steering wheel and standard seats made it feel a bit like a bus. I've had loaners without M Sport pack a couple of times now and I'm firmly of the opinion that the Leather Wheel and Sport Seats should be standard on every BMW. |

I just dropped my 1 off and got a 328i my first thought after feeling the steering was oh shit I'm gonna end up wrecking this thing, it has worse steering than the POS Toyota Yaris they gave me last time. Luckily I found the sport button and it felt like a normal car, not a normal BMW but at least a normal car. I didn't think the turbo 4 seemed underpowered compared to an older non turbo 6 but I think the 8 gears really help it out. I turned the start/stop off right away that was annoying. Gas mileage was excellent computer said I averaged 35MPG doing 75MPH on the way home with several sprints up to 100.

Yeah I have to agree I actually really like the engine. My GF has a new X1 with the 4 turbo and honestly it drives real nice and sounds pretty good. Also It pulls, not as hard as the 35 but not bad at all. Got her X1 up to 135 the other day and it was still pushing, could have swore that it was limited to like 130...
Anyhow really not bad.

Wow they mustve fixed the sound then. Because I had that 4 banger in an X3 loaner last year and it sounded like a massive shart when revved

I've driven the 328 with the 8 spd box and walked away very impressed!! The power is fast and linear and the 8 speed box bangs out gears up or down very fast(i really liked the combo) it doesn't sound that great but hey turn up the radio. I wonder why BMW doesn't offer the sound generator in the 328 is beyond me, if any car needs it, it's the 328 for sure.

I just got done taking my rental back and kinda changed my impression of the car a little. On the highway I really liked the car had decent power and was smooth, quiet and a pretty nice car other than it not having the sport package. What I found out I hate, it defaulted to comfort mode on every startup, it defaulted to that stupid start/stop bs at lights. The engine sucks in stop and go traffic. It doesn't have enough off turbo torque to be smooth and the shifts were too fast and made it rocky. I found it alot more useful to put it in manual mode leave it in a higher gear and just waste more fuel giving it more gas to keep it a smooth ride. As one point my gf thought she was gonna get sick it was being so jerky. I think this with the sport package, manual trans and a JB4 would be the perfect combo for somebody looking for good gas mileage, pretty decent pickup and a smooth ride.
Was so glad to get back in my 1 made me really appreciate how tight and nice it is, even if the bumpy roads were more harsh.

I find the new 4 lacking personality, flat sounding, and drives like a Japanese car, its just too refined...its not even close to the inline 6...

Disagree with the sound, I think it sounds awful. Granted I have only ever driven one in X3 form, but it sounds "diesely" one the bottom end and buzzes and thrashes above 5000rpm. I take it you have never heard what a proper sounding factory spec I4 can sound like?

When this happened did you have it in sport or comfort mode? Just curious.

Funny, the E30 M3 was one of the cars that came to mind, along with the old Honda Type-R cars of yester-year.

Both. It just seemed to be shifting too many gears too fast. When I was manually shifting to make it smoother I would just force it up to a higher gear and stay there it sometimes required more pedal to go but that was fine.
