Improve exhaust note and throttle response.

So, I brought my car in for servicing last Friday as I had thrown 3 CEL's in the past 6 weeks. The last two came within 24 hours of filling up the tank and none of the CEL's ever caused a change in performance so I figured it was some emissions thing or a faulty gas cap.

They did find that it was a faulty tank vent valve that they replaced. They did the normal QC check for fluids and tire pressure.

But, here's the kicker that I can't understand or maybe I'm imagining it. Ever since I got it back the exhaust note has been deeper and louder and the throttle response is smoother.

For reference, I have a 6AT 135 vert.

The weather up in Vancouver has been excellent in June so I've been driving it top down every day so I was really atuned to the sound of the exhaust. When I first got it back on Friday I noticed something but thought it was my imagination. Then on Saturday the same thing but I also noticed that from a complete stop there was a smoother launch. Occasionally I would get a slightly jerky launch but nothing too jerky that would make me bring it in for servicing. Just this morning I had to quickly accelerate from a complete stop to turn right onto a road as a car came up quicker than I thought and before it would be a bit jerky and even the DSC would kick in. Not today. It just accelerated.

Now that I've been driving it more I am more certain there is a difference.

So, now I have a car that has an even better exhaust note and my acceleration is even smoother. Definitely a good thing but do you think I'm imagining this or could they have updated the firmware without mentioning it on the work order? Has anybody else noticed this after a service?

yeah it's right at the end of the exhaust, It makes a audible clunk sound too, if you have someone else start the car

some people had it open right away, some had it open only above a certain rpm

lots make it always open with the flapper mod

Okay, I'll check it a bit later. Do you think that would have anything to do with the improved smoothness of acceleration? I wouldn't think so.

Ask your service department whether they upgraded your ECU..

Once my UCU was upgraded after throwing CEL's which had no relevance on power or anything just annoying, the car came back as you described..Deeper exhaust note and smoother.. Its the upgraded ECU for sure..

+1, I bet they updated you to the latest code. I really want to have this done to mine, I may have to find a "problem" that requires a reflash

Zuzu, thanks for the info. It's good to know that someone else is experiencing it and I'm not losing my mind.

I was thinking about this some more and I do recall a post way back about a year ago when someone noted that there was a new ECU update that increased the exhaust sound because that's what customers wanted. They had incorrectly believed that they should keep the exhaust note low so as not to disturb the occupants.

Anyone else recall this? It was originally for 335 from what I recall.
