Battery Drain
I just replaced my battery on a 2012 135i with 17595 on the odometer. Attempted to start the car and had nothing but flashing lights on the dashboard and the wipers would run sometimes. Jump starts were extremely difficult. After finally getting it started I went to the dealership. They told me that opening, closing, accessing... was cause for the battery drainage. Two days previously I washed and waxed the car with no problems. I find that difficult to swallow. In any case got the new battery and a trickle charge to keep it up when not in use. Drive it once a week for 100 miles or so. Oh well - thats life in the fast lane.

Did you fight for it to be covered under warranty? I had myn die in September after it sat for 2 days as well and I drive 500+ a week. So I fought BMW on it for 2 days and they ended up covering it.

No I did not. I will certainly look into it though. Tks. Did you contact BMWNA or the dealership?

It was a pain. They'll fight you on but just be persistent. Saved me $500+

Did you "register" the new battery when you installed it? If you didn't, the car's charging system won't charge the battery correctly. My wife's 2011 128i had its battery go completely dead with no previous warnings right at the 3-year mark this past March, and it was replaced under warranty at our local dealership. Zero problems since, so I'd second the recommendations above and take it back to your dealership. The least they can do is get the new battery registered or replace it and you can get a refund on the one you purchased.

Hmmm...sounds like you either got a bad battery or there's something else not quite right. It definitely should not be draining that quickly. Did you have the battery cable recall action done? If not, that might have something to do with it, unless your car wasn't part of the recall.

What?

http://www.nhtsa.gov/Vehicle+Safety/Recalls+&+Defects Also a 100 miles/week is sufficient driving to keep the battery up unless you live at the North Pole. Anyway, you need to complain directly to BMW. |

I may be incorrect on the recall being safety related. In any case, BMW did a recall on the battery cable connection replacing it with a new type. You'll need to do some research.

I don't think there are any switches tied to the hood that would drain the battery...

I drive my 2009 e88 2-3 times a week but have left it set for as much as a month or so before. I never use a trickle charger and it always starts. It is usually in the garage and our climate is not real cold.
If you are worried about drain when the car is off you can check it. Some multimeters have a current measurement capability. I got one that does it pretty cheaply at Walmart. You have to disconnect a battery terminal and connect the multimeter in series with the battery and terminal (one side of the multimeter goes to the battery, the other to the terminal for the car) and see what the reading is. I did this on my daughter's car that drains a battery if she parks it for a week or so. I found the reading was kind of high but the circuit doing it seems to be the radio circuit - and she "must" have the radio. It's the stock Toyota radio. So there seems to be a weekly connected short in that circuit. Anyway, a measurement will not solve an issue but it could identify one. If there is no significant continuous drain, I would say you had a bad battery. If there is a continuous drain, maybe the dealer needs to find it and fix it.

The clock will put a very small load on the battery. If the hood has a light, then it is another load. There maybe other things that need to be kept hot similar to the instant-on feature of some electrical appliances.
Also the OP did jump the battery, and BMW has a specific way to do this procedure. This is a bad idea if you don't do it correctly and can cause damage to sensitive electrical components. |

Op, do you have comfort access? If so, I would keep your key far enough away from your car so it's not on range of the cars proximity sensors. I was doing suspension work on my car and left the key close by and ended up with a dead battery after four hours. I think a bunch of systems run when the sensors can identify the key is close by, which is what drained my battery.

My car sits at times for 5 days at a time. A battery should not die in that time. A new one especially should go for weeks.
