135is question

Hi Folks,
I am new here and looking forward to my new BMW.
Does any one know what parts are installed at the VDC to make an 135i an is? I am wondering how much time that adds on to the delivery date to the dealer and how reliably those parts are installed.

Cheers

My understanding is that the PPK, exhaust and badges are installed at the vdc. They do not come this way from the factory which is why euro delivery is not an option on the 135is.

My sa told me that was not the case. My car landed on shore with hurricane sandy and I was very concerned. Called the sa to make sure it was ok. He indicated that there was only inspection and no mods done at vpc. Mine moved through in 24 hours.

Plus can't imagine why they would scrap a brand new ss exhaust and high output radiator fan. Margins are too tough to have that kind of planned loss.

I read this in a couple of threads on Europe Delivery, which brought up the question. The 135is has a second radiator as well which I would think would be done at the factory. Looking at photos of the VDC on Bimmerfest I saw some cars that looked like complete builds, or rebuilds from what I guess were damaged vehicles. So it made me wonder about the 135is.

Any way, looks like I have a couple of months before I get my car....

Wow, only a day to get to the dealer in the midst of Sandy! What you said makes sense about the parts unless they ship them without that stuff bolted on? I guess it is what it is

Thanks

I'm pretty sure your sa is wrong I live in Europe and tried to order a 135is and was told I could not specifically because the exhaust and other IS goodies are installed here once it hits the port. All 135s leave the Leipzig factory as a 135i. All the vin #s classify them as a 135i to insurance because that's what they leave the factory as technically. I'm pretty sure they know what they are talking about here in Europe where they are popping these things out constantly. They are wrong about a number of things at stateside dealers sometimes. When I was on vacation back home an stopped in one they told me if I ordered a 2013 1 series it would have the start stop feature lol.

To the OP kinda funny you ordered this car and don't even know what you're paying for xtra. But that would be upgraded wheels exhaust black mirror caps the performance power kit auxiliary radiator and if you got black leather it will have blue stitching.

A few of us who just got our IS models (after extremely long waits from port) have confirmed not only by talking directly to the VPC, but also with pictures of the PPK2 and performance exhaust being installed.

We even saw an IS up on a lift having the PPK2 and auxiliary radiator being installed (driver's side wheel removed for ease of access) and from behind you could see it still hadn't had the performance exhaust installed yet as it still had the normal black chrome tipped exhaust.

We're told the PPK2, performance exhaust, and IS badges go on at the port. The 313 wheels, black grille and mirror caps seemingly come installed.

Not a day to get to my dealer. A day to get through the port and on the truck. While my sa could have given me bad info the install looks clean. I've looked at it closely since I wanted to make sure there was no sandy damage. Also been under the hood dropping in my K&N and changing the angel eye bulbs. If it wasn't done at the factory I can't tell so I wouldn't be worried.

Interesting. Some of us had to wait 2 weeks, but think we also had an extremely high concentration of 135is cars on our boat and may have backed each other up. We were told it adds 2-3 days at the port.

I also imagine you got one of the early ones so maybe they changed procedures? Seemed nuts to me cause I could never figure out what on earth they'd do with a perfectly good 135i exhaust...put it on, put it on a boat, and then just discard it for the PE? but there it was still on someone's 135is as they were installing the PPK! At first I thought he had opted for a custom or black tip exhaust until I realized, it was just the normal 135i exhaust and they just hadn't installed the PE yet!

Was right during hurricane sandy. November. In any event clean install if it was done at vpc.

Not only does insurance not recognize the 135is as a specific model designation, but neither did BMW when I brought it in for the (paid for) break in service. I had to make sure they made a note that it has the PPK.

It's flagged in the model code. The ordering guide shows the difference. Interestingly the AG code is the same leading me to believe that you're right that the car is turned into an is at vpc.

I am pretty sure I understood what I was paying for. I got the black leather with blue stitching because it was "exclusive" , it took the sales guy a couple of try's to get it right.

After sitting around for the better part of a month I became more curious about BMW's fulfillment process and I must say that the amount of info you folks are providing is a real education on the process.

The fact that the vin is for an 135i might be a good thing in terms of the cost of insurance.

Agreed, it does seem nuts. It is nuts. What a phenomenal waste of money to add all the normal parts at the factory only to pull them right back off. Not because you added some accessories from the dealership, but actually ordered the thing that way to start with. Odd.

Maybe they should include all of the replaced factory parts with the car when it is delivered? Always nice to have some spares.

I have an Alpine white IS... Farmers Insurance agent.. the cost is less for insurance as the vin comes up as 135i coupe only.. Make sure you have OEM endorsement. This coverage doesn't cost much per year. The company will have to cover anything OEM installed including carbon fiber parts from BMW.

That has worried me too - my car doesn't have any PPK stickers like I've seen on others' photos.

I just checked my 135is...no sitckers that I can see. But I can see radiators in each front wheel well (oil coolers, right?)

My 2010 335i (e90) had the PPK added at the dealership after delivery. The sticker was in the front area of the engine bay. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Mine is about a third or halfway up on the underside of the hood. I can take a picture if that helps anybody as I'm about to go down to the car in a few.
