sorry to hear about your dealer issue, mine pushed back on the first attempt but stepped up when I pressed harder and discussed with them the value of goodwill and the my concerns about escalating matters. The conversation really only took a few minutes and they agreed to take care of it as a matter of goodwill.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the good wishes. It's disappointing, but not surprising. They said it was because I'm out of the warranty period and that's what I expected. I'll think about buying a new top in a few months and maybe do the installation myself. I like knowing as much as I can about my car.

How long did it take to get the new top mounted.
Just curious.

The local dealer did my second new one in a day. I dropped it off and picked up a loaner early in the morning and they had it done by quitting time that day. I picked it up the following morning. I think I dropped it off as I was headed out of town for the first replacement so I don't know how long that took.

What is the dealer supposed to do for a TSB? fix at owners cost? fix at no cost to the owner? My 128i's rear glass window is falling ( separation from the top )

Same issue that my 2008 has had for several years now. I raised the issue of the top TSB at the final warranty service, but the car had so many other problems I had to let it go. Car has been a secondary, and currently has 55k miles on it. Despite being garaged for most of its life, the inner and outer layers of the top have completely separated. The tops on these cars are complete and utter garbage, and the replacement cost through the dealer is about half the value of the car. Looking for a local upholstery shop that can offer some options, or will attempt to repair myself.

Just another disappointing saga with a car I still love to drive, but came with the worst ownership experience imaginable. At least I don't have to fight with our local monopoly dealer anymore...

I currently have the same issue. I went to a local upholstery shop today and the owner told me i would need a new top because there is alot of tension on the top at the rear glass.

Had problem with loose rear glass on my '08 E88. Took it to a local upholstery shop. They charged $240 but said likely would not last and only other solution was new top ($2400).

They were right about their fix. However, I have a specialty hot glue that has some sealing properties. I used that to seal outside bottom of glass to top. Has worked for about 8 months now with little apparent problem. Don't see any moisture issues and rattling noise is gone.

I had my rear glass re-adhered by local upholstery shop and moisture/rattle problem gone. It has only been a month but so far so good, they did an outstanding job.

Man, consider yourself VERY lucky. I've spoken with every shop I can find in the Charlotte area, and none will touch it. It's a $2K NON-OEM replacement or nothing.

Which in my case, especially considering the car doesn't need the entire top replaced, means nothing. I'll much rather pay the labor to someone with some practice fixing this sort of stuff, but I'll be going DIY out of necessity...

So far so good for me. I would keep trying different shops specially mom/pop ones even if it means driving out a little, no sense in replacing the whole top just because of the glass.

I went DIY route to glue the rear window back a couple weeks ago.

Primer: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00473W5V8/
Applicator for Primer: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013SNXF1Q/
3M Window-Weld: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FW61EW/
Clamps: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MQX4T6/

In retrospect, I should have got 12 clamps instead of 6. I made do with a long piece of wood to clamp the whole bottom section with 2 clamps and used 4 on the sides. Good luck!

Not sure if serious, troll, on the lam, or just bad at humor.

My car is 5 years older than yours.

Live in a fairly temperate climate (NC). Garaged all but 1 year of ownership.

A real issue that effects real owners of these "Non-jap" (SMH) cars.

Thanks for your insight nonetheless!

OP, if you still follow this thread, what were your long-term results with the packing tape method? The clamps dbronnik posted double the cost of the repair and I'm wondering if I can get by without them.

Spike, Mine has lasted a month. Know that is not long term. However if you download the instructions from 3m. The material has a big tensile and shear if fully cured. They also imply that some material thickness is needed. Did basically what op did except used no primer as i did not remove the existing material. Used bricks to hold top to window instead of tape. Hope this helps you.

My repair has held up after almost a year later. Best $100 I have ever spent.

JB Weld works - ask me how I know.
It's not pretty, but it's also not rattling.....

Shocking to hear the issues with convertible tops. I didnt hesitate to but my 13 128i convertible as I had great service from the top on my Z3. My Z3 still had the original top after 22 years. I did repair the rear window seal area that started to seperate but other than that just clean and treat it with BMW top care products. I'll have to keep an eye on my 13s top.

I did the 3M glass treatment - first time without the primer or the making sure the glass was completely clean. This was due to just the bottom part of the window coming loose. It lasted less than a year. I then redid it in August 2014...window came completely loose, cleaned up all the old sealant and bought the 3M primer this time as well as new 3M window weld. It was not especially pretty, but it worked. It has held for almost 4 years now. One issue I had is that I did not get it as "Tight" as the factory one, so It still rattled. I solved this by placing a piece of (edge piece of the puzzle piece floor foam) foam inside the top, in between the window and convertible top at the bottom of the window. There is a little pocket that is between the glass and a metal bar that it fits right into.

I have noticed the internal pieces of the top getting frayed - looks like black garbage bag as it de-laminates...but really only seen when the windows are down and the top is up and it blows around a bit.

******UPDATE 5 years later I am doing the job again... Lasted just short of 5 years. Not too bad for $30 repair. This time I am using the suction cup clamps to hold it in place.

Last edited by Syclone; 09-02-2019 at 04:12 PM.. Reason: add a picture of the puzzle foam
