Are the OEM brake pads Metallic or Ceramic?

Looking for some replacement brake pads soon. Can someone tell me if the OEM BMW pads on the 135i are Metallic or Ceramic?

They are semi-metallic, as are nearly all original brake pads. The benefits are less dust and noise than metallic, but better initial cold bite than ceramic.

Less dust? I think OEM BMW pads are specifically designed to dust like crazy.

Metallic pads are race pads, and they dust a whole lot more than OEM pads, and they produce that wretched squeal.

Anyone who doesn’t have matte black wheels hates BMW pads, they dust SOOO much!

I would always say my wheels are powder coated.

Coated in the powder from the brakes.

Buying Akebonos was the best idea.

Akebono doesn't make pads for the 135i, but Hawk makes a great set for it:

http://www.hawkperformance.com/performance-street

I have the Yellow pads on it. No dust and long life.

yes they are. this material that dusts so much is actually very good for your rotors. it is smoother and less abrasive than your typical pad, meaning it "massages" your rotors are you brake and makes them nice and shiny. these brakes are better than your typical Honda/Mazda stuff regardless if you drive aggressively or conservatively. so don't whine and keep the front wheels clean.

Did you bed in the pads? I recall from somewhere that Akebono say no to bedding in.

The OE pads on my 128 don't dust nearly as much as the OE pads for my E46. BMW changed the pad composition for sure. The bite is also significantly less. I actually prefer the bite and to deal with the dust. I do not like the pads on my E82 right now. They feel a lot like when I had Akebono ceramics on my E46.

I did bed them in - almost always do with new pads.

Zero issues, low dust, no noise, great feel.

They work well but they have no bite which I miss. The dust IS very low tough and what dust there is, is more of a light brown dusting than dark black powder.

I bought a set at a decent price from a forum member so will give them a try when I need new brakes. I've thought about putting them on sooner than the OE pads wear to try to prolong rotor life for a bit. Did you change rotors when installing the Akebono's?

That is the common observation. Some like the more linear grip, some don't. From what I've heard, ultimate stopping power is similar to OE.

I didn't change rotors, I've been running Centric Premiums up front and Zimmermans that are about 2 years old. Work great and hold up to my abuse , haven't driven on the track but definitely some aggressive street.

Oh yeah the bite is non existent too. I miss having a little bite, but the pedal is very linear.

I gotta say I've been thru like 2 gas tanks (approx. 200-250mi each) without washing the car and my wheels are still shiny. Before they would be BROWN in 3 days.

Need rear pads and wondering what to go with. Looking for something like Akebono, which for some odd reason are not made for the 135i. Any one has used cool carbon?

Best to keep similar compounds front to rear so you should get new fronts as well if you're making a significant change to something like Akebono. It'll mess up your brake bias otherwise.

I hated my Cool Carbons lots of noise and they actually ended up leaving deposits on my brand new bmw performance rotors. They are ruined causing vibrations. I will stick with bmw pads.

My other replacement option on my list are Hawk HB603F.616 & HB604F.598. How is the dust on these?
