Wastegate rattle PREVENTION?

So I’ve had my first 135i, bought it with rattle and It killed me. Fast forward now I’m now in the market again, found a rather clean 2008 with 75k miles and it’s fbo, I know... a recipe for wastegate rattle. According to the owner they’re quiet, I won’t find this out for sure until I look at it but let’s jsut assume right now. Say I get the car and everything is fine, is there anything I can do to prevent or helpbe easier on to keep the wastegates from getting noisy? I have a feeling the car being fbo on original turbos isn’t gonna be the best solution.

If they never have been replaced, it will happen eventually.

Save money for stage 2.

True, but they will be refurbished. Our turbos aren't even manufactured anymore so any turbo replacement will be a used and refurbished turbo

which is irrelevant, since his car is full bolt ons, and warranties don't cover modified cars.

To the OP, you're buying an older, questionably modded bmw....I think the wastegate rattle will be the least of your problems.

You got lucky with the warranty adjuster. Mods automatically void and blacklist your car with 3rd party warranties. I don't even need to research all 3rd party warranty policies to know they all have that in the fine print.

OP, just start saving some cash to address that issue in the future.

Some people talk out there ass in regards to the issue. I have been through it twice. Bolt ons have zero to do with the issue.

actually, they have something to do with the issue. Why would a third party warranty provider warranty turbos that are being spun well beyond factory specification? Why would you expect any warranty when you choose to modify the car? I get the fact that everyone wants something for nothing, and at the age these cars are, they are cheap enough that the civic crowd has access to them but...

It's really bad info to spread that full bolt one and a 3rd party warranty will be ok. It's not. You either have gotten some clueless warranty adjusters or you have some kind of deal worked out.

You just simply can't mod your car and expect a warranty company to fix any issues that arise.

Ah. Great. Someone new spreading horseshit about high boost levels causing wastegate rattle. It doesn't. The actuator rod wear is typical on all N54 cars and is generally unavoidable. Makes for a $1000 wear component, not all that different from suspension bushings. That said, companies slinging aftermarket repairs insurance are allowed to cover or not cover whatever they want. Just don't be deluded into thinking its because of tuning or hardware changes. If they could get away with saying its a wear component and not covered at all, ever, they would.

OP, you can get service kits for the rod, take the turbo out and have them replaced, though I believe this involves welding and machining, and is not a good value. Other options involve wastegate tuning on the ECU side, and actuator rod adjustment on the mechanical side. Both of those can be done in a matter of minutes with no more than an android device or a wrench and pressure gauge.

You can adjust them to reduce the rattle. We have done it on mine. 165K + with FBO+
