2013 128i AT slipping when shifting manually between 2nd and 3rd
2013 128i AT. When I put it into sport mode and 'row my own', there is a noticeable hesitation between 2nd and 3rd gears, about a half second hesitation and a 500 RPM increase before the shift. It doesn't do this, that I've noticed, in regular mode or in sport mode if left alone (not manually shifting). Happens throughout all RPM ranges. Thoughts?

How many miles are on the car, and how many are on the fluid that is currently in the transmission? Have you inspected for leaks or anything of the sort?

Manual swap?
But seriously; it could simply be that the torque converter is unlocking when you shift, in order to smooth out the shifts and dampen the engagement... I think a slipping transmission would be much worse than what you're describing, but I can't really be sure...

depending on the in service date of your car, you should be still under the 5 year/60000 mile powertrain warranty. I would take the car to the dealer as soon as possible.

That low a miles the dealer should be good about it...

You know what DOESN'T slip?
My manual transmission. Nor does it get quirky every time there's a software update, because...no software in the transmission. Sorry, I had to.

Unfortunately, we have to replace clutches, but only after every 200k+ miles if you're gentle (1'er owners just aren't ). My dad's former E39 540i had 270k miles on the original clutch with no slippage or weirdness...

Supposedly the clutches are pretty good. The DMFW is garbage and I hate it, but the DCT has the same thing for refinement reasons (that backfired, didn't it, BMW?) Shifting is the easy, enjoyable part. Using the clutch is the PITA.

Love my DCT and think it's a total blast, but driving a car with a manual transmission is definitely a fun and engaging experience. AT, DCT, or MT, it's all good as long as you're driving a 1 series.

I reported this to the dealer shortly after the car was new and they said it was normal. Whether that's true or not, it has not changed in 36K miles. I have found that by judicially feathering the throttle slightly as one shifts from 2nd to 3rd it avoids this. |

It happens to me too. Driving a 120i E88 (supposedly N46B20) engine. However I found it happens when I’m too eager to shift (early shift) and assume it’s sort of a blip to compensate for that, especially when it’s floored and close to red line.
Perhaps try focusing on driving the same way you would in auto: listen out for the revs and shift accordingly. I’m not sure how to put it, but it’s sort of primarily focusig on getting up to speed instead of shifting, and let the latter be a secondary priority? It’s worked for me and I felt it might’ve been a correction of my shifting technique and have experienced much lesser occurances. TLDR - anticipate less/ don’t rush into it (gear shifts). |

Using the paddles or gear selector is useful when you want to hold the gear going thru a curve to apply even power at the exit.
The 6AT is so much better than a MT.
