Does this annoy anyone else?

or is it just me?

articles like this keep popping up.

http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pb...NESS/140829978

not hating against the 2 series but these reviewers act as if the 1 never existed and the 2 is something entirely new... even comparing to the 2002 again... reusing that description that the 1 used...

????

Right from the article:

Quote:
The 2-Series coupes are about the same exterior size as a Honda Civic Coupe. But they are longer and wider than the BMW 1-Series models that they replace.

Yes, annoys me when people review the 2 series and just as you said, act as though the 1 series never existed. They should really be comparing the 2 to the 1 and where it may have improved or not improved. Acting like the 2 popped up out of thin air and reviewing it in a vacuum, not rating it or comparing it against anything else seems to lessen the weight of the review of my mind because all I'm thinking is, what would these same people think of a 135 or 135is if they gave it a review. Would probably be the same, if not better.

Each 2-series article should discuss the car it replaced and then discuss how it's different and where they may have been improvements, etc. etc.

No disrespect to anyone but some of these car experts do not even know that the 2 series is an extension of the 1 series.

Eh; it's a car review by a non-automotive publication. I never expect much familiarity with brand history from those outfits.

Well that's my point with most of the reviews and stuff online, even by experts. Most of them never even drove or reviewed the 1. So, I'd be curious what they'd say if they drove THAT and did a review.

Best line from that review:

"Plus, a Launch Control function amps that up by maximizing traction and adjusting engine performance — so much so that BMW achieved 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, which is sports car territory."

What!? SPORTS CAR territory!? Well, that's not a car for me then! After all, I'm not some sort of hooligan!

... LOL ...

Agreed very much. Not even single test in English or even German has mentioned the 1 Series. Just its class competitors and the... 2002.

Couldn't care less about it. The 2er didn't impress me and I don't really want the 1er compared to the 2er. I'm happy that it seems to be left out of the nonsense.

For a reviewer from a non-automotive publication, the trade of runflats and a suspension tuned for them (ie soft), for Michelin PSS and a suspension tuned for them would be enough to create a very different impression between the 1-series and the M235. One that now reminds them of classic BMW handling where the 1 series didn't.

Umm who cares!? Yeah it's annoying..... But we still have a superior car IMO. I drove a friends M235i on the Nurbergring right after my 135i, and honestly stock for stock they are the same. The M235i feels "bigger on the track" and the extra track width does feel more stable in the corners... but back to back on warm tires there was 2.4 seconds difference between them with the M235i coming out on top. (New PSS's versus very worn out PSS's on my 135i.)

its rather annoying, not just because they act like the 1-series didn't have many of these things, but also because it proves BMW's new ///Marketing is working wonders. Right from the first few lines of the article "This first M Performance automobile to arrive...". If they had sold it as a 235is, I think a lot of the hype wouldn't exist.

No it does not annoy me. I think the 128i and 135i will be viewed in the future as the last BMW with connection to the heritage which established BMW in the US market. I think BMW is now addressing a different market with the 2 series. My only comment is that comparisons of the M235i to the 135i or is should be performed with 135's that have regular and not run-flat tires. Getting rid of the OEM Dunlop's transformed my 135i.

I keep reading this - that there is a huge difference/transformation when going from the OEM Dunlop run-flats to something else.

I'm new here, and to the car (3 weeks)... so just curious - what am I missing with the OEM tires? Since I only have 4K on the car, I'm not going to replace them anytime soon, but what is it I have to look forward to?

Thanks!

If you can afford to do so, dump the run-flats. I drove my 135i for 2 years with the Dunlop's for the same reason, I did not want to replace tires with plenty of tread life left. I was ready to trade the 135i for a Cayman, when I decided to try the tire switch for $1k before spending $30k. Not only does my 135i ride and handle better but it is now very quiet and the annoying rattles and squeaks which I was told were normal for a 135i are gone. I always thought my 2000 323Ci was the best car I ever owned. Now my 135i is.

Runflats suck... a set of new, good tires totally changes the car for the better.. handles better, ride quality, noise, etc... BIG BIG difference

yes the 2 comes from the 1, but to most, the 2 like 4 are a brand new line and are reviewed as so. its nothing to take personal. The 2 is a great car as is the 1er. lets not get e9x M vs F8X M and act like the new car is an insult to the old.

Agreed but at least in most reviews for the f8x the e9x is compared to the new f8x.

have you driven a 2-series?

i drove a 228 around the autocross and thought it was horrible...the steering was uncommunicative like the F3X 3-series. Like a luxobarge. Sure it's not the same as street...but i'd expect it to behave at least like a sports coupe and it did not, IMO.
