I guess I'll fit the water-oil heat exchanger fitted on the higher-performance N52's while it's out of there.

Here's my spaced intake manifold. I know, the erector set is a tad ghetto, but it works while I figure out a better solution. Notice my heat shielding. I have zero problems with IAT's, BTW.

I need to clean off the area and see if it gets like this again to confirm, but yes, this could be a sign...

Bought one off of Ebay a couple of years back, $29.00 shipped, and am waiting on the OFHG or the water pump to go.

Prices may be a little out of date, but (i hope) the hyperlinks are still good. I didn't verify them. I'll send you a copy if you'd like, just PM me. I believe this list to be comprehensive, thorough, and accurate for my car. YMMV

Also, the OF housing itself is the same as the 135i (335i), which means it can mount a plethora of OEM and remote oil cooler options.

I plan to use the O-W heat exchanger because fluid-to-fluid heat exchangers are (relatively) efficient and the stock one is sufficient for my needs. If I didn't have a SULEV, I'd get a high performance, all-aluminum radiator (because).

I've found one from an N20 with 25,000 miles. $125 ain't bad for a whole unit that's practically new. All I then need is the $20 gasket kit.

It's not just the gaskets. The hoses are not the same between the cooled and non oil-cooled engines. My list includes basically new everything like hose clamps. Certain hose mounts are unique to the oil-cooled variants, too.

I know I don't have to say it, but I will. Don't buy used coolant hoses, the most expensive items on the list.

If you look at what cars it's used on; you can grab it from just about any BMW since the N-series engine came out. I thought about doing a custom air-oil cooler originally, but found the cost was prohibitive, and I think the water-oil one will suit my needs just fine.

Why can't the SULEVs get a high-performance radiator? I know CSF Racing makes some for the N52s...

I wouldn't dare buy used rubber hoses.

I live in California and own a SULEV (I love that I can tell "lesser" lovers of the environment in California that my car is a SULEV), so starting this year I'm subject to bi-annual smog inspection. The SULEV radiator is equipped with a "PremAir" catalytic coating that converts ground level ozone into oxygen using the heat dissipated from the engine. There is a sensor, and the car will throw a code if the sensor is gone or malfunctioning.

EDIT: I would be very pleased if one of the high-performance radiator manufacturing companies made a true performance radiator for the BMW NA SULEVs. There are hundreds-of-thousands of them.

That sucks! I wonder if any of the tuning companies makes a bypass for that sensor...

I did more research, it seems I need the pipe coming out of the water pump from the auto cars, and the pipe bridging from a fitting on that pipe to the heat exchanger. But I'll look at my engine tomorrow and see what I really need. RealOEM isn't helping (it thinks my engine has the heat exchanger).

Oh, and the best RealOEM references I decided on for this mod was something like an early 2006 E60. The details escape me (did the searches several years ago), but I'm confident in my conclusions regarding part numbers and quantities.

I've compiled a parts list of what I need:
Name: Screen Shot 2018-02-10 at 20.38.40.png
Views: 710
Size: 233.3 KB
It includes the new housing, a gasket kit (includes gasket, bolts, and pressure switch), the hose running across the front of the engine, and the hose running from the pump to the engine block with the t-fitting for the auto trans cooler.

I'll be doing this, along with a coolant flush, system cleaning, and refill. For coolant mixture, I'm thinking of doing a 70/30 water/antifreeze mix with Water Wetter. I'll also do my oil change (I hit 170k miles today!), Castrol 0w-40 Euro Blend, and a Mann filter.

Well, I took the passenger seat out of the car after my rain + window incident. Left it in front of a heater all day, thing was dry as a desert by the end. Put it back in the car, no dice. But, I did get a consistent signal from the airbag module, unlike before, which is progress.

As for racing seats, I think I'm going to shoot for a pair of OMP First-R's, they're FIA-Approved full bucket seats that fit my dimensions with a little room for growth. I was also recommended the Macht Schnell occupancy sensor module, but I think I'll stick with an eBay emulator, which will keep the airbag active, but will clear the error.
