Wildly Optimistic Mileage Readout

My previous (2011)128i's OBC mileage readout was pretty darn accurate. Generally within one mpg of what I verified at the gas pump. My current (2010) 128i reads between eight and ten mpg higher than what I'm actually achieving. The distance remaining to empty seems to be right on the money, for some reason. Is this something to be concerned with? I assume mileage is calculated theoretically based on time the injectors are commanded open.

OBC says 36mpg. Actual mileage is 28mpg as measured by trip odometer/gallons added at fill up.

Hmm, you should measure the distance you cover via your phone. You may have a wonky wheel speed sensor, which could contribute to strange distance readings as well, but that would generally generate a DSC fault...

Not a bad idea to check the speedometer against gps. I'll download a speed ap and check it.

As I mentioned, the mileage readout on my first 128i was pretty accurate. I tried a gps speedometer ap on my phone, and found that my speedo reads about 2 mph high at 70. Perfectly normal, as far as I know. I'm not freaked out by this anomaly, I'm just curious. The car is running perfectly. No codes. Same actual mileage as my first car. I tried searching this subject, and couldn't find any threads, other than people complaining about poor fuel mileage. I'm actually pretty stoked to be getting the mpg that I do, considering the EPA estimates. I guess it's one good thing about being a flatlander!

On my first 135, the average mpg number just kept creeping up and up and up until it hit 99.9 and stayed there.
I never bothered to have it addressed, as I didn't really care, but I thought it was funny.
My current 135 works fine and I average about 23 mpg combined.

That's about where I am with this. I wish I knew what was going on, but if everything is fine except for the number displayed, then I'm not going to throw parts at it, or reset adaptations, or try coding something out. There seems to be no risk to leaving it as is.
So I assume that you tried resetting the average mpg, and it never reset, or did it just keep creeping up when you reset it?

Correct. I reset it and it just did it again. It caused no problems though. I probably drove that car for 2 years with a 99.9 avg mpg.
It wasn't something I cared about enough to spend time or money on, because I always keep my display on miles to empty.
