As the article states, 6-speed, easy on the options and the car is a great bang for the buck proposition. My 09 has the sport package, xenons, coral leather and I've got two more payments to go.

It's such a great feeling when making that final payment.

After owning my manual 128i for just over three years now this review is 100% spot on! Its the reason I bought this car over any other. I will keep it for a long time so I don't have to look for a comparable replacement.

Every now and then I wonder if i should have bought that 128i Vert.
Then I hear those twin turbos and think.....maybe not.

But i should have gone for the NA car. They just last that much longer!

Certainly carries a bit of weight when Mike Miller(chief of Tech Talk in Roundel) talks about it being the significantly more reliable model.

Isn't the car pictured in the article a 2012 135i with the stock wheels?

If you take care of it and maintain it, it should be good for a long while: I had 18 years on my E36 before I traded it in for the 128i...

The wheels are the feature that makes me belive it is 135i. They are the stock wheels you get on a 2012 135i without the sport package. Regardless, a great article that really captures the essence ot the 1 series. Hope to see a 135i buyers guide in the future.

Never the less this was a good write up on a great little car. (as we all know!)

Just for fun, I did a build your own 128i on the BMW USA website. The purpose of the build was to design a sporty purist version of the 1er without turbos to see how much money I'd save over the 135i with options that I bought new. So I axed the premium package, got black leatherette instead of leather, and changed my exterior color from AW to Vermillion Red metallic. I kept the M-Sport Package, 6MT, and Harmon Kardon sound (with BMW Assist you have to get). The price came in around $36K, a savings of roughly $9K over my 135i. Damn. I mean I love my 135i, but, damn.

Liked the article except for the comments about the Steptronic. No, I'm not gonna say its as fun as a manual, no its not. But the steptronic 128 is still a very very fun car to drive. And his comment about starting in first ?, just put it in manual mode, M1.

It's the auto of of the V6 CTS - it's an ok tranny. Not meant for spotty driving, so don't confuse it with something that was designed to be quick (like an AMG auto or the old N54 ZF 6HP-21)

Got to ask: Why is the front swaybar switch more common in these forums rather than the rear swaybar switch the Mr Miller recommends in the article?
