Plan on replacing it at 50k intervals. Replacement pump is cheaper than a replacement engine.
Is this a job your local indy mechanic can do? Is there any reprogramming required afterwards for the pump or thermostat?

April 2008 build, 66K miles and my water pump is fine. Tuned since about 20K miles. Progressively been adding mods over time, last one was meth since about 50-55K miles.

I've always heard to expect the water pump to fail by 100K miles, usually around 80K based on older generation models and friends who have had them. Knocking on wood for mine... though I got the warranty extended to 100K so I'm kinda hoping it just fails by then so I can just replace it already.

Can anyone comment on this? I'm trying to decide if having my local garage mechanic pro-actively replace the water pump and thermostat is safer and more cost effective. Rather not have this fail in the middle of driving, tow the car and be without it while BMW fixes it and rips my wallet a new one if it can be prevented. What are you guys planning on doing?

2009 135 with about 110K (crazy huh?). My pump hasn't gone bad yet (knock on wood). Is there a DIY around here? Something I could do? I've come up short using the search button.

From what i have read, its even an easy DIY job. It is readily accessible once you disconnect the endlinks from your FSB and let it hang. Drain the coolant, a few bolts and youre there. Just purge the coolant from air and youre good to go.

+1. I believe it to be relatively an easy replacement job. I have not really seen a DETAILED DIY. Just that one DIY with a few pics here and there. I would really like to see someone do a step by step DIY.

Btw... you can buy a new BMW (dealer)pump & thermostat from one of our forum sponsors for under $500 for both! That is a much better price than $1,200 that some have paid stranded at a dealer in Timbuktu.

I am almost at the right miles to start thinking about doing a waterpump replacement as well. Humm....

Maybe us higher mileage owners should buy the parts and just keep them in the trunk in case that happens Ask them to quote both parts and labour AHEAD of a failure and then surprise them by producing the parts when your car gets towed there. Keep 'em a little more honest.

Thats if you don't proactively replace them ahead of time that is.

It would be nice in this poll to know the engine and if the car is modded. A modified/tuned 135i is going to dump a lot more heat than something else.

Does anyone know the mode of failure? Is it an impeller? Electronics?

Given the temps these engines run, I can understand why there may be early failures.

So far we're averaging a 12.5% failure rate(all models). By far most are 2008 model years. Keep up voting guys!

I have just under 10k miles on my 2011 1M, no failure.

I had just under 30k miles on my old 2011 N51 128i before I sold that, and there had yet to be a water pump failure.

Give it time lol.

I was at my dealer today picking up some brake rotors for my e39... I asked them how long the electric water pumps last. I told them a friend of mine with an early ('08 or '09) 335i just had his water pump die at 90K miles. And they said... of course... at anything over 60K miles and your on borrowed time. So.... I think 60K or 70K is gonna be when I change mine.
