Octane Booster
Are they good, bad, work, not work? Would it do any good just to add to a full tank once in a while? Some claim BOOSTane works. Your comments welcome.

Why not run a tank of 94? I did when I put in a fuel injector cleaner once when I was trying to eliminate what my problem could be (thought maybe fuel injector was going bad). The only other thing I would do is run a tank of race gas from near a track. If I'm not mistake it's 102 here in Canada. I wouldn't run an octane booster but that's just me. No one I know of uses it. My dad runs 94 in his hot-rod which is overkill but whatever lol. His buddies run alcohol (but they are drag cars really).

I already said this in your other thread, but most of them don't really do anything. Will maybe raise your octane from 93 to 94. Even if you were to run 100 octane fuel in an otherwise stock car, you wouldn't really see any performance gains because the ECU is tuned for 91 and can't take advantage of the increased octane.
That being said, BOOSTane's website claims one can will raise the octane of 17.5 gal of 93 up to 102. If you have a custom tune that can take advantage of that, I'm sure you could expect some decent performance gains. Maybe 10-20 hp, but that's just a wild ass guess...it's also $20-30 a bottle so it better make a difference for what you're paying. The $4 bottle at walmart ain't gonna do shit. Interestingly enough, they also have dyno plots that claim a 27hp increase with no tuning on a stock 335i. I know the DME in our cars is pretty smart and may be able to do some slight self tuning. One weird thing in their description though, is that they say "we brought the vehicle near knock on pump grade, 93 octane". I wonder how they did that? Maybe by limiting airflow to the intercooler to increase IAT? In that case, the stock tune would usually pull timing, but might not need to with higher octane fuel? https://boostane.com/dyno-test-resul...-turbocharged/ What are you trying to get out of adding octane booster? If you want that extra 20hp, I think getting the PPK flash tune, MHD, or Dinan tune would give you that 100% of the time without having to spend $20 extra per tank

Thanks for the responses. I guess I am just trying to get a little more hp out of the car without spending more money. I believe the car was overpriced when I bought it in 2012. I really enjoy it and it does have more power than I need or, sometimes, can handle. Thanks again for the helpful comments.

run meth if anything..boost in octane and cooling effect...helps clean the engine of carbon buildup as well.

I have a flash tune from "OE tuning". the tune gets me 380 hp. 370 tq.
Two weeks ago I picked up my car after getting wastegates replaced and the car was below a 1/4 tank and I decided to fill up at WAWA which is 92 octane. after driving the car about 3 days and maybe 60 miles the yellow engine light comes on. I take it back to the shop and he thinks it's the gas I used was too low octane after he read the code. I bought a can of Royal purple Octane booster 16 ounce for $12. I put that in and filled it up with top tier gas. It took about 5 gallons. Since then no check engine lights. So in my unusual case I believe the Octane booster helped. The codes were misfires ... so I guess my mechanic was right. |

You got it and the numbers they publish are optimistic as well.

I use the Torco booster, It's the only one i know of that actually works.
https://www.torcousa.com/torco_product/un_acce.html I only get 91 octane where i live, and a full can with bring a tank of gas above 100. I was able to run map 7 with around 18 psi. |

Octane booster is ok in a pinch but keep in mind it's going to foul the internals of your exhaust valves and exhaust with orange soot as a by product of the chemicals.
Methanol, Race Gas or E85 are the better ways to increase effective octane. Increasing effective octane only benefits you if you can increase ignition timing or add boost which would normally decrease your knock threshold. On any otherwise stock car it will have little benefit. |
