Should I worry of possible engine damages ?

No problem, its a BMW. The engine can't damage just like that. Enjoy the car than to worry too much.

If I was driving a friends car and he/she flipped out when I got 1500 RPM away from redline I would think the car owner was the one who had the issues

there is no chance this hurt the car

if you were pulling out in traffic and all of a sudden a big truck was barreling down on you would you let the car rev to 5500 and above or would you make sure to short shift it?

I let all my colleagues try to run my cars (slowly) inside the office parking lot. No one ever did this to any of my cars. This friend of yours is just careless or may be he just used to be driving Japanese cars with very soft pedals. My Benz 's fuel pedal is 'heavy' and so as the E90.

None of the people in this board can tell you whether it had any harms, it did or did not, it will be a long time or anything that would be ever noticeable during your ownership.
Just have to trust BMW engineering works.

My friend pulled the same thing. He wanted to show the car off to his soccer buddies and thought it'd be cool to do a 6500rpm clutch-dump LAUNCH right in front of them. What he didn't realize was that there was a speed bump approaching quickly. He didn't see it until the last minute... Double whammy!!! I was soooo pissed. The problem is, I couldn't get mad at him because he has helped me a lot over the years, including staying at his house for several weeks.

you can run the car at redline for long periods of time without damaging the engine.

if your friend ran the car past redline somehow, then you've got a complaint
Uh, his "friend" is still inconsiderate. He took off flooring it from the get-go. Even race engines need to be warmed up before hitting the higher range RPMs. There may be no damage, but still...that's a douche move imo.

if the car had already been driven that day it's really not an issue especially if it wasn't 30 degrees outside. Engines stay warm for some time after shutting them down.

there are plenty of members here who probably do the exact same thing to their own cars daily without even noticing or thinking about it.

The N52 engine is such a free revving spirit, that it does not take much to spin it up to 5,500 rpm. As we all know, BMW engines are designed to rev hard and quickly up to red line so with 2,000rpm headroom, you had no worries mate.

No doubt the high revving time lasted a few seconds at most, so if the engine cannot take that kind of "punishment" we should all reconsider BMWs. We know that those engines are built properly for that kind of work and more.

It's a non issue.

Did you ask your friend not to drive the car hard whilst cold before he sat in the driver's seat?

Your car will be fine.

no, I keep it to about 4500 max until I get to the freeway unless I need to accelerate to avoid an accident

I drive my car so calmly it rarely sees 5500 even when warm

yeah, but really we all know 45% of the board does this every day, the other 45% won't rev past 4000 no matter what, the other 10% drive the car like a normal person

(I need a smiley face thing in here, it looks all serious, but im just goofing around!)
