Tire recommendation?

Hey all,

I am in the market for a new set of tires. I have the stock 18" rims on a 2009 135i.

I'd prefer some all season tires. Any recommendations, hints and prices would be great.

my research has led me to believe that the pilot sport a/s 3's are the best all season option for this car. they will still provide grip when its colder (below 45 or so the super sports lose a lot of grip) while still being more than enough in the winter. here are some nice reviews.

Check out the Forum Vendor TireRack.com

You'll find extensive reviews on that site as well

Most tires are terrible in the snow unless they are specifically designed for such weather. Infact BMW's in general are terrible in the snow!

I have the A/S3 as my intermediates. They are not really an all-season, Michelin calls them a 3 season tire, hence the 3.

I had to use them once in about 1" of snow. Was the scariest drive on snow I have ever had. Unfortunately, this is the only "all-season" available in our stock sizes. They are also louder than my winter Hakka's.

I will be putting Michelin Arctic Alpins on as my intermediates next year.

Thanks for the input everyone. Any recommendations on where to buy the tires from?

Was thinking either Costco or Sams.

are they really that bad in the snow? i've watched multiple videos of people putting around with them in more snow than that with no issues? are there any other variables? what size?

They are horrible in the snow.

Basically, there is no acceptable all season option for the 135 in stock sizes.

Correcting one of the above posts, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 is not a "3 season tire".

The A/S 3 is an all-season tire, with a compound designed to work in lower temperatures and a tread patter that meets the "M+S" criteria, hence the "A/S" for all-season. The 3 in the name is not indicative of "3 seasons", but instead is meant to express that this is the 3rd generation of the most recent Michelin UHP A/S all season tires following the Sport A/S and Sport A/S Plus.

That being said, they have only mediocre snow traction. This is not a tire for year round use for those in the far north and in Canada. For the majority of the US, it works fine for an all season tire and in a lighter snow area like Maryland, they might get the job done.

From this review:

What cars are well suited to the Pilot Sport A/S 3? From my time behind the wheels of a broad spectrum of cars at NOLA, it seems these all-seasons are best mounted on any car that is likely to encounter a mixture of hot and cold temperatures and dry and wet surfaces. The Michelin folks emphasized that these are considered 3 season tires – they are meant to extend the summer driving season deeper into the fall or winter in areas that get a lot of snow – but once there is deep snow, it’s best to switch to full winter tires.
I 100% agree.

I have a set on my stock rims, in stock sizes, I bought them as my spring/fall intermediate tires. One week after I put them on (full tread depth, scrubbed in), I had to drive in about 1" of snow. Might as well have been on full summers. I turned around, drove back to the shop, and put my winter Hakkas on.

Will be using Pilot Alpin PA4 in near stock sizes next time as my intermediates. Hopefully they can actually move the car if the roads are more than just wet.

I ran Conti DWS on my 128 and generally liked them. They chunked out at the track though Before that on a 325iT, Mich Pilot Exalto A/S and those also were quite decent, even in moderate Mid-Atlantic snow/slush.

On current 135i, ran non-A/S Mich PSS last summer (including many track days) and they were very good for both street and track.

Switched to Blizzaks for winter, and will be swapping for Potenza RE-11 starting next week.

The winter tire / summer tire approach is somewhat a hassle, but all RWD BMWs really suck in the snow without winter tires, and A/S are silly on the track (unless you go once a year). The right rubber makes a huge difference.

But recommend you stick with Mich, Conti, or Bridgestone.

I drive my 1er all year round and I live in Michigan. I run dedicated snows and have zero issues. BMW's are great winter cars, it all comes down to proper tire choice.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "great," but I get your point. The right tires make a huge difference, and winter tires or snows are best for any RWD car.

The worst snow car I ever had - and this was with snow tires - was a RWD Volvo 240 GL.

I've driven/owned several FWD cars with winter tires and the only advantage I've witnessed is the ability to slightly out accelerate a RWD car with equal tires. Realistically it comes down to braking and turning which has very little to do with RWD. FWD or AWD.

Ultimately the best scenario would be to have an AWD with winter tires.

From Michelins official web site, not a blog :

http://www.michelinman.com/tire-sele...3/tire-details

"The Pilot Sport A/S 3 is Michelin’s ultimate Ultra High Performance All-Season tire combining summer levels of wet and dry grip with cold weather and light snow mobility"

I'm not stating that these tires are great in snow, but they are not a 3 season tire.

Thanks a lot.

Also, I did a search about this without any concrete results. Do I have to do anything with the TPMS when taking the tires to be installed?
