Interesting. Quite a few black on red 1'ers like the track, huh?

i did a thread about this last spring (below). i'm not taking this car to the track anymore, but i was using 255 star specs, which are very very wide for a 255.

For your reference...

I was able to fit 245/40/18 yoko advan ad08 up front with very minor rub (only on BIG dipped sweeps or very abrupt raised bumps - inside of fender) - lowered on kw sc (fender jusssst above tire) - alignment pins drilled out - camber maxed, no camber plates

I have since raised the car all around 0.75cm w/ alignment. Absolutely no rubbing

not to create a digression here, but it's worth noting that 245/40-18 is too tall. 245/35-18 is the proper diameter.

agreed that for a non-rubbing config, 245/40/18 is too tall (25.7" Dia), whereas a 245/35/18 or 235/40/18 are both < 25.3" Dia. It's just a question of how bad the rubbing will be...I'm more ok w/ it rubbing on the fender liner occasionally, as long as it's not on the strut or fender.

rubbing is one minor possible side effect of a tire that is too tall, but the more serious side effect is the lengthening of drive ratios when that same height is used on the rear axle. this isn't the right thread for this discussion, but large increases in drive tire diameter shift drive ratios and will reduce your torque applied to the road multiplicatively. the 245/40-18 yoko tire you reference rolls 809 times per mile, as opposed to the oem bridgestone which rolls 833 times per mile. this 2.97% increase in rollout represents a 2.97% decrease in torque. so lets say your car is making 400 foot pounds of torque, these tires would be costing you exactly 11.88 foot-pounds of torque in every gear, in every scenario. this can be corrected with a shortening of the final drive ratio in a differential upgrade. you can find more info on this in the wheel/tire forum, or possibly in other threads in the track forum.
