British take on the 135i

I found this thread interesting (and somewhat depressing). The British have had the 1 series for several years now:

The Europeans have/have not been that excited about the 1 hatch. I am in Stuttgart and you see plenty of them, I have test drove a 118d and felt it was great. On the flip side you are looking at a car which costs significantly more here than in the states plus has more competition on the Euro market. In the US, frankly it is a steal when compared to other autos, most decent cars are going to cost atleast $25-30k and have nowhere near the built quality nor performance. Just my thoughs.

Thanks for the link. I found the read interesting. They seem very concerned with residuals and seem to view the auto as temporary equipment. Probably a very pragmatic view.

Residuals are important in the UK where many cars are company leased, and all are much more expensive than here in the USA.

I saw a ton of 1er's in Munich, and really warmed to them. The press, over the years, has been lukewarm. The 130i MSport was the first to generate real enthusiasm, but it seems to have some flaws. EVO was a bit harsh on the soft rear suspension which they surmise BMW chose to help with rear grip on the LSD-less 130i, but overall they still say it's the one "they'd buy" with their money (in that segment).

I suspect the 135i will be similar. The DSC+ "e-diff" will make or break this car, IMO. With MUCH more torque than the 130i, rear traction will be a serious issue.

The 1-Series has been a slow seller in Europe and most of the Euro rags have given negitive reviews of the various models offered.

No doubt since the 335 has issues putting it all down on the pavement.

Evo liked the revised/refreshed 130i M Sport in their recent comparo with the Audi S3, Alfa Brera, and Mazdaspeed 3 (which they were very negative on, but it gets high praise here). Apparently the rear suspension has been tuned for the better. I have to wait to drive it since I may or may not fit, but I still have my hope up that it will be a blast. The 335i sport is wonderful to drive, but a bit too big for my tastes.

I was referring to the most recent EVO article in my above comment. They still bag the soft rear suspension. But, it's the one of that group that "they'd buy."

They REALLY bag the MS3. As you said, it garners high praise here (and in the US press). I haven't driven one yet.

what is it about the american auto press? the mazdaspeed 3 has massive torque steer and an engine that cuts the power when your wheel isn't dead straight. sounds like a great car, hm?

the 1 series is a great chassis in search of an engine, and now it has a great one. i'd bet my hat that the reviews here and abroad will be pretty positive.

Winding Road is showing promise, tho.

Have you got any figures to support this assertion? And which 'Euro rags' are you referring to, the English language ones or also from other countries?

Agreed. I view them as the American EVO... Except they really don't penetrate the lower ends of the market very well.

Heck, I can't blame DED Jr. He has a lot of contacts to get those killer cars. Who wouldn't, if given the chance? :thumbup:
