aftermarket warranty
Anyone care to to recommend an aftermarket warranty company?
Some research led me to warranty direct, they quoted 2,250 $ for 7 year 100,000 miles with 100 $ deductible for my 135i really only want it for drivetrain failure, the twin turbo's scare me a little bit, and that 335i engine repair thread and 25,000 $ bill is enough for me to want a warranty, I plan on keeping the car at least 8 years. searching forums for aftermarket warranties, like bimmerforums, scares me all the recommended companies from 2002-2005 are bankrupt and gone

Be careful getting an aftermarket warranty. Most of the warranties out there are rip-offs and use blatantly illegal tactics to get people to sign up. I used to get machines calling my cell phone playing recorded messages trying to get me to sign up for a warranty. That was before I bought my 1 and my car was over 8 years old and way outside the warranty range. They only stopped when I filed a complaint with the FCC.
Do a web search and you'll find articles about this and the warranty companies many whom don't actually have money to cover warranties and simply go out of business when claims are made. The ones that stay around have so much stuff in the fine print that it's impossible to actually make a claim because nothing is actually covered. Hopefully the govt will crack down on these companies and laws will be passed but that takes time. I recommend if you want an extended warranty, buy one from BMW. You can purchase it at any time up until right before your warranty is going to expire.

The BMW dealer I test drove the 1 at definitely tried to sell me an extended warranty when I was looking at the car. I probably still have the brochure somewhere (I'll look). I believe it was a 7 year/100,000 warranty and it wasn't that expensive.

I thought BMW offered a extended warranty up to 100K miles and 6years from the purchase of your car. so it really only adds another 2 years and 40K miles to your factory warranty. Its not cheap but figure your getting genuine parts and labor. I know you can buy the warranty at anytime under you factory warranty.

My dealer offered the GE 5 star warranty, and it was $3600 or so for 8years and 120k.
I'm thinking of choosing it. more thoughts? I was told that any mods of any kind will not effect the GE warranty |

Be very careful about a warranties not offered through the manufacture (BMW).just because the dealer sells it does not mean it is from BMW. Non manufacture warranties are not regulated the same and you don't has the same rights or recourse. If you are modding your car even slightly, I wouldn't even think about it.
Read all of the fine print.

I will never buy an extended warranty again. when i cancled my previous cars warranty they prorated it from teh datea of purchase. (day 1) basically for a $1550 warranty on my sti i got $700 back and i only had 40,000 miles on my car. i paid $850 to extend my warranty 4,000 miles.
BMW deffinately tried to sell me one, in fact that was the only part of my buying experiance that i did not like. personally...i'd just put that 2250 or whatever into a savings account and use it IF you need it. |

2250 wont put a dent into a 25,000 $ engine repair job if the turbos go at 70,000 miles
