Back when they had integrated cell phones in cars, there was a black spiral-shaped antenna mounted near the top of the rear windshield. This thread reminds me of the people who went out and bought a plastic stick-on fake antenna, and plastered it on there to give their car some kind of phony elevation in status. About the only difference here is that I can't by an M Badge at Wal-Mart.

Seems like this re-badging happens with almost every make of car. This topic came up at the Honda/Acura and Subaru forums all the time. There's nothing wrong with putting Type R, STi, or ///M parts on your car, but it certainly doesn't change the model designation. I wonder if people would be less upset if the badge said something like "Tuned by ///M" instead.

What many of the "addicts" have to remember here is that probably 95% of the buying public couldn't point to the "real" M1 if you would pay them a million bucks if they could do so.
BMW (or any mfr.) will call any car anything they need to, to sell the more of them. New Taurus anyone? Not a great example but you get the point. If they produce an M version of this car, I totally expect it to be called the M1, only the hardcore enthusiast will know or care about the name. The rest will be happy buying a even hotter car than the normal versions we have now (or will have soon LOL). |

Sounds like it would be justifiable to place an "M" badge by the rear numbers if you desire- to read "M135i"-since the car has a BMW installed "M" steering wheel & suspension (and doesn't the M badge alone look just like the one on the sport steering wheel?) - but not to change the car to read just "M1" since that denotes a special and different vehicle. IMHO, that is. If the car reads "M135i" the guy is just as correct with the badge.

Yeah the same crap happens in the G community...soo many guys runnin' around with their G35s badged as Skylines....ugh! Just because it's the skyline in Japan doesn't make it one here! But like others have said...it's your car and your money...if you want it to say Skyline...knock yourself out. I personally like the M badging on the inside of the 1...if for no other reason than a nice conversation piece to those not in the BMW know that might happen to be ridin' shotgun. I won't be badging mine as such on the exterior of course...but had BMW decided to throw one on the outside somewhere, I wouldn't have taken it OFF either...

Wouldn't do it myself however, the Australian version of the 135i already has no less than 8 ///M badges.
Steering Wheel, Gear shift Knob, each door sill, each wheel. I don't see any issue with another ///M badge on the rear. As long as it's not ///M1. |
