Engine Malfunction - 135i 2011

I was driving pretty normally today and was trying to catch up with another car so I pushed the gas pedal and immediately the Engine Malfunction light pops on and it sounds like the engine is having a problem turning over. I stop at the next stop light and turn my car off to see if restarting it will help it. Restarting did fix all problems thus far, but I was wondering what caused that?

My intuition says that my fuel pump might be failing?

Check for any thrown codes. That is the only way to know.

If you have zero engine mod, bring it to the dealer for check up, it is dangerous if you suddenly enter limp mode if it's the HPFP issue.

N54 or N55?

Chromo, I got a N55 also, it should be rare to see a HPFP problem. If you gets no mod, bring it to dealer, or Dackelone advice if you or your friends could read code.

Hmm...weird. My car did the same exact thing today after I really gunned it from a stop light. The Engine Malfunction light came on with some weird engine noises. Turned my car off and everything was back to normal....

What is the cause of this? I have a n54 with Cobb AP, Intake, and exhaust

That would be fine if the car was a low pressure fuel system like most. Direct injection is a whole different ball game there pimpin lol

+1,

DI means the pump is totally different to your run of the mill FI. From memory they use an injection pressure of 2000psi They need to pressures this high in order to get the desired fuel atomisation. They inject straight fuel, not an air/fuel mix - if they did, they wouldn't need the high pressures, they wouldn't need the expensive injectors and they wouldn't have HPFP issues - but BMW chose the Siemen's technology didn't they!

Should I not worry if I'm not getting any codes thrown?

Congratulations. You, sir, are part of a rare breed of N55 owners with a failed fuel pump. Your case will now serve as an example to the entire BMW community that the N55 is not immune to pump failure!

In all seriousness, that sucks, but that's what the warranty is for. Get it fixed and put it behind you!

It actually through a fuel pump code? Or they just assumed and replaced it?

Assumed and replaced it, but interestingly enough my problem didn't go away, so I am taking it back in.

Figured. I think that is why people are claiming the n55 has hpfp issues. most dealers just assume since it happened with the n54. Tell them to check your valvetronic solenoid or the system itself.

I had a similar problem, took my dealer a while to figure out. It was a vanos motor... Replaced.... No problems since. Did about 25000 km after that.

So they finally fixed it after another 2 weeks.

HPFP was bad
Mass Airflow Sensor was bad
Low Pressure Fuel Pump was bad
Charge Airflow Sensor was bad

With that many "failed" parts, seems they threw everything at it to see what would stick.

I'm surprised BMW authorized that many parts replacement, if there weren't actual codes.
