"Shaving" rims for offset...Anyone done it?
So, there's a guy here who wants to trade his 19" csl style wheels for 18" stock bmw wheels. He's got them on a 335i right now. I asked offsets but he doesnt know. I have a friend who sells wheels and tires, and told me he had to "shave off couple of mm for his new set of wheels to fit. I told him this would probably compromise the strength/integrity of the wheel. He said his were not affected at all. I definitely am worried and hesitant to do this. More so since the streets here are crap.
Any opinions/experiences?

I've read LOTS of mixed opinions with the constant response from those that say it can be done, to not exceed 3-4mm max. Still I don't think I'll do it, as it will probably take more than that to fit these wheels. Thanks!

If you are talking about cutting a few thou off the the pad where the wheel mounts to the rotor, that is no big deal.
Any capable shop with a large enough lathe can face the mounting surface down. common procedure on custom work. |

I had Tirerack do it on a set of Kosei rims back in 2001. But they were "blanks" that TR had for just this purpose. Also it was a 7"x15" wheel to go on a '96 318i (not exactly known for gobs of torque. Or as I would say: "It gently caressed you into the seat as you accelerated."
But integrity of the wheel is important. I would be hesitant to go that route.
