Another OT: Transport in Italy

never ever travel through italy without a car, italy is beautiful by car, seriously 3rd world by public transport, alot worse then sydney which is saying something.

bus time tables do not exist

train time tables are useless

italian ticket vendors will treat you like crap if you cannot ask for a ticket in perfect italian, then keep your change every time! so you have to ask for it. seriously dirty trick that one.

Ticket vendors will just close when ever they want leaving you stranded in small towns

taxis will rip you off more then any other city other then Paris.

last time i was there i walked around the cities and drove around the country side in a hatch back and Italy was great!

the hatch back however has to be big enough to hold luggage under the retractable cover. If thieves can see your luggage it will go, no questions, if you leave your car with the luggage cover open your luggage will be gone when you get back 100%.

if you travel on public transport look out for Roma children, and never carry your wallet in your back pocket, that will go in seconds on a bus or train or even just walking the street. carry cash and cards somewhere locked to your body, like a money belt or inside pocket.

also italy is one of the most expensive places on the earth, don't expect much in return for your cash, if you do you wont enjoy yourself, ya just gotta accept that they are ripping you off and forget it and eat your soggy pasta.

i am saying all this a bit late in the tread but i wish someone had told me all this a long time ago, i keep going back however, something about it

oh yeah and another thing, AUD is historically high against the Euro, could be good to buy Euro in advance as a change in currency can result in big dollars lost, don't blame me if it gets higher however....
