am I crazy to consider tune for leased '11 135?
seeing these new threads for the BMS and Vishnu N55 tunes has my heart pounding, and my wallet wincing. I have a three year lease for my 135 coupe. are these tunes safe enough for people who lease?

Dinan is not part of BMW...
No difference between din an and the other tuners as it relates to your BMW warranty. You can be screwed either way. |

While I enjoy tunes, do at your own risk
Tuning automatically voids the ability to CPO the car. If you want to tune and not worry, spend the cash and get BMW Performance. If you want to 'play it safe,' get DINAN. If you want to play fast, Vishnu or Burger!

Dinan tuned cars are not covered by BMW.
Dinan have a warranty and it's better than the tuners that leave you hanging, but it's not a BMW warranted tune. |

You might lose the warranty, IF they discover it. I had a tune on a former Audi lease. It was an APR flash install, so nothing external to see. Plus, it had a stock mode, which was easy to set using various button pushes of the cruise control buttons. When going to the dealer, you just switch to stock mode to not draw attention. Then you set a lock out code, so that if the dealer knows to try the cruise controls for alternate programs, nothing will happen. APR and GIAC make slick software for Audi/VW. GIAC has one for the 135i, but the cost is a good bit higher than what it costs for an Audi tune. Audi APR on sale was about $500. GIAC wants like $1000 for the 135i. I think it costs that much just because they can. Development for the 135i/335i is no higher than for the A4/VW 2.0T. Both brands have plenty of turbo cars on the road for return on investment. I digress, sorry. With a flash you can't just remove it and sell it, like you can with JB. So, a JB has the added benefit of resale, so it's probably a better choice for a lease. OP, go for it. The sooner you get a tune, the longer you'll get to enjoy it and get a longer return on your investment. I waited a year on my Audi, so I only got 2 years of higher performance, so it cost me more per year. |

The general number is that about 50% of BMW sales are lease.
But, why does that suck? BMW runs a very smart lease program, and does very well with CPO cars. Leasing allows initial owners to pay for the depreciation, and then dealers have used and CPO'd cars to sell to those who would otherwise not be able to purchase a BMW brand new. BMW has great residuals, compared to the other "luxury" brands. BMW's are sought after cars in the used market. The big lease market also helps those who loan or cash purchase, because of the great residuals. I don't see how that sucks for any of us. |

Even if you went Dinan, you would essentially void the BMW Drivetrain warranty while maintaing a Dinan Warranty. However, if BMW were to find the tune they would not be able to CPO the car because it was modded. BMW no longer has a dual warranty with Dinan.

While I own the car (N54) its under warranty and I went with the JB+ and Scan Tool. I pop it off, check for codes when I go to the dealer.
Since its a leased car - just take a simpler approach (as I did) and you will have a great DD that is balanced between the stock and modded worlds..

I have leased both of my cars. I am currently 24 month leasing a stage 2+ car with every mod possible.
At month 22 I just put it back to stock and lease the next N54. |
