BMS Oil Catch Can Install - Review

Just wanted do give a quick review of the BMS OCC for the 1M. Terry went through some R&D with the install on the 1M and things crossed over from the 1 series pretty easily.

The unit is really well made and ultra stealthy from the design to mounting location. As far as the quality of the OCC, its design and build look flawless, below you'll see some photos of it mounted on the car and an image borrowed from their website.

Install was very straight forward, although there was a minimal bend/crimp issue with the rear hose. Terry is supplying a hose and install instructions to fix the issue that were run into initially on the 1M. Overall, an amazing unit and a small investment for longevity of your engine

How about posting some slightly larger pics? 200kb to 400kb fit nicely on 1addicts.

What are you wanting to see Dack? I haven't taken any pics of mine simply because i've seen alot of pics online and they all looked pretty similiar to mine. LOL

So what kind of different hose and instructions are you getting? Cause I'm installing mine soon on my 1M.

From what Terry told me its a tad bit different but still a tight fit. I think the instructions are all up to date on the site.

Here are Terry's comments from when I last spoke to him:

"The new hose is a bit better but it's still a tight fit. In the guide there are now directions to notch the back of the plastic engine cover to make it a bit easier to go in."

What was wrong with the old hose?

I just ordered a kit which should be arriving tomorrow.

Nothing really, it was just a bit tough to adjust it perfectly... The original hose is still installed on the car with 0 issues. Im assuming he just made a slight mod for future hoses somehow. This was installed quite some time ago when the 1M first came out and no one had really installed the OCC on a 1M.

When emptying out the can, do you have to remove anything to get to it?

I just placed an order 3 days ago, I hope I get the updated hose... What's the install like, even with the old hoses? On a scale from 1 to 5... 1 being easy, 5 being the covers on the back of the headlights.... lol

It's a 2, but only because of the OEM hose clips. When you get to the clips, slide a paper match or a thin strip of card board (like from a cigarette pack) under the four points where the clip touches the coupler and pull the hose and clip away from the coupler. This will help the clip slide over the locking mechanism without cracking the clip. It will make sense when you see the clips.

I was familiar with the carbon buildup issue when I was shopping RS4s but despite browsing this and other forums, I'm still a bit in the dark as far as how important this mod is (e.g. on a scale of 1 to 10) to N54 longevity? Would anyone consider this to be something along the lines of The Single Most Important Modification if one plans on keeping the car for a long time?

Definitely a great question. Also, how would this effect our warranty?

I can't say for sure but the photos i've seen of oil accumulation due to blow back would make me think about LONG term issues. Now if you typically baby your car (no frequent spirited driving, track events, canyon runs etc) than I would think is no reason to upgrade to the unit. But at the end of the day, it's a pretty cheap mod for keeping your car running clean inside.

Its pretty easy, like stated in an above post, i'd say a 2. The old hose isn't hard to install you just had to finesse it to the correct angle.

There is only one type of hose and it fits the 1M just fine same as any other N54. A hose revision was made to make the 2 piece in to 1 to lower production costs but it has the same physical dimensions and does not change fitment, etc. If you're unable to get the hose to sit without kinking one option is to just leave the rear engine cover bolt off back there You'll never notice it with the cowl on. Another is to notch the plastic engine cover like this:

Also, here is what the BMS OCC caught after two days of racing their 135i. Imagine this junk coated all over the inside of your intercooler, chargepipes, and intake valves. Yuck!

You can just click on my sig to order or get more info on it

Well said!

I didn't have the pics to post up of build up but I had seen them before and made my decision to buy the OCC based on the above.

I'm having problems removing the clips that hold down the wires to the two sensors (on passenger side and drivers side). How are people removing these clips from the cowl? I'm not talking about removing the actual sensors from the cowl, but instead the wires that lead up to them. I guess one option would be to cut the tape, but I'd rather just unclip the wires if possible.

I installed mine this past weekend. The install went smoothly. The only slow part was removing the strange hose connections on the OEM tube.

Also, I found it easier to remove the 45° elbow on the intake tube and then install the u-bend hose instead of installing it while in place.

I cut the tab on the plastic engine cover. It's so far back there that no one will ever see it, and it really does make a huge difference as far as room goes.

Here are some pics:
