How long does your car take to warm UP?

Hey, what is normal working temperature for N54? My car takes very long to warm up, like 10 minutes at least. I wondering is there any problem with it. How long does your car take to warm up?

I think some other thread said the car is warmed up after about 5-6 miles of driving.

Correct answer there.

Warming the car up obviously is based on other factors. Ambient air temp, engine temp at start up, throttle position during warm up.....
I always try to get the oil temp up to 140* or so before really stomping on it. Thats a temp I've heard before and sounds reasonable to me. Better safe than sorry.

You have posted in the 128i forum - and we don't have oil or water temp gauges.

But to answer your question anyway, it takes about 4 to 6 minutes for the OBC in a 128i to give an oil level reading - at which point, most of us consider the motor to be properly warmed up.

haha, sorry for posting wrong forum, at least I got a idea that the car warms up at the time oil reading could be read.

I just want to point this out as it was interestingly brought up on another forum. The owners manual states not to warm the car up stationary. But to do it at moderate engine speeds. It's quite the contrary to what I'm use to.

That's been the rule for a while now... My old E36's manual stated the same.

Any indication on time? People say until the oil level gauge shows up.

Off topic: How does the 128i compare to your past 98 m3?
I was behind a 4 door Yellow e36 m3 the other day, made me wonder.

It is oil temp, so 10 miles or 10-15 mins is not unreasonable, and it depends a bit on outside temps.

It is better to warm up an engine under gentle driving than idling. This is not new nor limited to BMWs.

I still own the M3, the 1 is my wife's car. I haven't got to push her car yet but I get a sense of a shorter wheelbase, even though the M3 is shorter in comparison. It probably has something to do with whatever steering assist it has. The 1 rides a lot harsher too with the sports package. I think it's mostly from the run flats though. My wife tries to keep me away from the car as much as possible. One thing for sure is the M3 has a lost more room than the 1, specifically the trunk.

New to me. I guess I never thought to research the subject before.
