What are you guys using for winter wheels?

I've used my stock wheels in the past, but I recently wrapped them in all seasons as backup wheels. I'm in the market for some new winter wheels that I'll wrap in nokian hakkapeliitta's.

Does anyone make steelies for our car? What are you using? I'm in New England and unfortunately have to daily my car this winter. I'd like to not spin out every time it snows.

Cheers

i picked up some 16" style 30's on facebook and wrapped them in some Blizzak WS90 205/55R-16. I was debating steelies myself but found a good deal on the style 30's.

Excited to try 'em out! I had Continental VikingContact 7's on my e46 330i and it performed great in Minnesota winters. I think ground clearance will be my biggest issues with the m sport suspension on the 128i.

Edit: I'm dumb, I thought you had a 135i, not a 128. I'd go with any 16" E36 wheels you can find. I know tire rack does sell steel wheels that fit the 135i, so I imagine they also do for the 128i. You could just get a package of steels with the snow tires already mounted and balanced.

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1952573 -------- These are currently for sale, but I don't know if the offset will work with the E82

Gonna need 17's, so I'd just pick up the cheapest set of 17" E36 wheels you can find.

That guarantees a decent offset to fit side to side, and 17" to fit over the brakes.

I'd recommend searching the forum to make sure whatever you choose does fit, because not all 17" wheels fit.

Here's another possible source if you are looking for something a little more upmarket.

I bought a winter tire package from Tire Rack that included steel wheels and Bilzzaks.

Interesting you say that... Lol. It's been on my radar, especially since they have it in 4 door.

It's not a bad option if you have somewhere dry to park the 1er.

I drive a 2002 Golf most days, and everyday in the winter. It's definitely not anywhere near the drive in the 135, but it's a good reliable beater to rely on.

I have a 2019 Toyota C-HR for my daily beater. Even having that, I still will swap on a set of winters onto my 135i. You never know if life happens and you're down your primary mode of transportation. I've never had this happen to me before but I literally had three vehicles have some sort of malfunction on me at the same time. Two of them had issues that rendered them inoperable and the only car that was still drivable was my 135i. My 135i had a problem but it was only emissions related and didn't affect driving the car at all. My Toyota had a dead battery that left me stranded at the gym. Needed to bum a ride off of someone I knew at the gym. My F150 pickup had a heater core hose burst.

Getting back on topic, the Toyota has Michelin Cross Climate 2s which has changed my mind in getting a set of dedicated winters for it. For my 135i, I bought a set of used rashed up style 264 wheels which I have a set of Blizzak WS80s mounted on them. This setup was a carry over when the 135i was my daily driver. I've driven in some pretty deep snow and have never gotten stuck. Had a good laugh during one snow storm where I was trucking along past a WRX stuck in the snow spinning all 4 tires.

And will still need a GOOD set of winter tires to get anywhere.

So that just burned up that savings.

TireRack will often have closeout rims. Look for either the E82 or E90. Both work fine. 17's is what you're after.
But don't skimp on the tires. Hakka, Blizzak, Hankook. Nothing else. In that order.

Also a good LSD in the car will totally transform it's winter abilities.

Definitely. I have a local place (Tire Barn) that gets in used take-off tires. I managed to pick up a set of basically brand new Blizzak WS70s (several year old design) for $120 mount and balanced for my MK4 Golf.

Obviously check to make sure they're putting on decent tires, but a good way to save.

Nope, came with summer and winter tires. This is snow / salt country and both sets of tires is a common occurrence here. If you plan on long term ownership , it's the only way.

I did too, but got Rial X10 aluminum wheels. I bent one driving through a pothole the first week I had them on. Wish I bought the steel wheels.

I’m looking to pick up an 128i as my DD next year and I also live in CT (upper Fairfield county). Do you really find the 128i spinning out frequently on A/S tires? Winter tires are admittedly much better choice but I hadn’t felt the need with my other cars for winters outside of a few days - then I just stay home. Doing my homework before purchasing.

My car is absolutely useless once there is any snow on the ground. For me, that is not an exaggeration.
