Brakes starting to go: Get them changed early?

Hey guys

So recently I've been noticing a soft pedal along with increased stopping distances. Any way for me to get BMW to change the brakes before the light pops up on my dash?

They will change them, but they will charge you. That is, if they say they still have life on them. If the sensor did not set the light off, and they are below the level called for, they will repalce and not charge.

How many miles have you gone on the original break pads?

Our X5 used to last about 15,000 miles. That explains all the brake dust, but never a squeel.

Check the mileage left on your brakes by using the BC or iDrive screen - see "Service Requirements" in the manual as to how to do it. If you aren't close to replacement but your brakes aren't operating properly, see your dealer as it should be a warranty item. Either way, it's covered unless you have more than 50k miles on the car.

The brakes supposedly don't need changing according to the car (9000 for fronts, 27,000 for rear) but that seems off. My car has about 15,000 miles on it and the brakes haven't been changed yet. And I'm not the type to take it easy on the car.

Normally, brake pad should last somewhere in between 25 - 60 K Miles. It all depends on how often and how hard that you brake.

That seems about right. I'm fairly easy on mine and with 23,000 on the car, the projected life is 12k for the front and 32k for the rear. This would be total mileage of 35k F/55k R vs. 24k F/42k R for yours.

Let us know what your SA says.
