Axleback exhaust only

Hi,

I currently own an '08 135i coupe that is 100% stock. Thinking of doing an axleback only exhaust. Looking for something with a nice, exotic sound but not too loud. If on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being stock exhaust, and 10 being straight pipes), I'm looking for a 5. Price is also an important factor -- not looking to spend more than about $500 (new or used is fine).

Do you think Berk street axelback exhaust, or CP-E axelback, or BMW Perf Exhaust would be best? Or something else?

Thanks for the help!

I'm partial to Berk street performance axle back....best sound imo. Well, other than HPF, but their system (group buy) includes mid-pipe.

I like
I wouldn't quantify the Berk race as a 5 on the loudness scale. Sure, mine is mated up to catless downpipes and the stock N55 (also catless) resonated midpipe, but it's insanely loud when I fire her up in the morning. My neighbors probably think I have a jet in my garage. The Berk street is a little tamer since it's got a resonator, but I wouldn't suggest the race version if volume level is one of your deciding factors, especially if you ever decide to possibly get a downpipe. I also like the sound of the Maddad and had I not found a killer deal on the Berk, it'd be high on my list of choices as well.

I'll actually be in Newport Beach tomorrow afternoon if you want to hear for yourself.

The Berk is a full CAT back replacement. The MadDad isn't. There is quite a difference.

Exhausts that I've heard in person that I know sound great would be Billy Boat, aFe, and Rogue Engineering DMS. Each of them sound great with of course different exhaust notes, but each one is easily something I would put on my personal car and be 100% satisfied with it.

I like
+1 on the Berk, it's simply the "gotta have it" exhaust for the 135:

Components installed
Macht Schnell 3" Catless Downpipes
Berk Sport Exhaust

Hope this helps!

I think I've got it narrowed down to afe, active, berk race, or berk street for an axleback to get me started.

I don't want something OBNOXIOUSLY loud, but a little throaty and nice gurgle would be perfect. Is the berk race really loud compared to the street version?

Ideally, I'd like something with black tips - but I can always look into aftermarket coating/painting so it's not a huge deal.

Yes, the Berk race is a lot louder than the street version. Sound is awesome though. See the link below and the vid posted by JK135i. I have the Berk ceramic coated axle back, had a nice tone and gurgle, but I wanted more. So, I added the AR catted DP's and Berk resonated mid pipe. Perfect now imo.

Thanks for the reference! I think your setup sounds great. I'm just a bit concerned that the Berk Street is a bit too mild with the axleback ONLY. In some of the clips you can hear the whine of the engine over the exhaust note.

The video of the active axleback in that thread sounds pretty good though...

Edit: The afe looks like a very similar design to active. Why the large price difference? I found the afe for $480 shipped (black tips too!).

+ 1 on ActiveAutowerke. It sounds surreal every time I go WOT. However, I think it's a fair bit louder than 5/10. That being said, I still recommend it highly

I think Maddad Whisper is what you're looking for.

To be honest, I've had the Maddad axle back, CP-E axle back, and N55 midpipes with the stock axle back and probably the best balance is the N55 mid pipe with stock rear (with golf tee mod).

The Maddad, in my opinion, adds absolutely zero in terms of volume. It really only changes the tone of the exhaust, not the volume.

The CP-E axle back sounds absolutely incredible and with the stealth pipe installed, should get you to the volume you're looking for without the drone. I just popped mine off to send back for a stealth pipe retrofit. It has great throaty sound with great gurgles when off the throttle.

For $425 and a few hours under the car, you can easily swap out the mip-pipe from the N55 pipe and call it a day. It doesn't drone one bit and it's probably a 3-4 on the volume scale. The CP-E is a 5.

As far as the sound that I like the best, it's definitely the CP-E. I will be putting it right back on when it comes back to me.

Yep, I agree...I dont think you can go wrong with the aFe at that price either.
