Gearbox Oil
Hi guys,
How often do you change your gearbox oil? I have a 130i which i've had from new and has now done about 47,000kms. I found it hard to get into 3rd to go around a corner which was quite scary. I know our beemers have the best gearboxes in the biz (cept for maybe Honda) but should i get it changed to something like Redline? And if so what viscosity? Joe |

I'd be keen to do a change soon and maybe swap to something that improves shift feel. Cold shifts into 1st and 2nd are notchy. I'm at 18,000km. I've got a SSK but it was much the same without. Car's well run in now so it would probably be a good thing to do regardless.

To be honest I don't think there are that many 1er owners who have changed the tranny oil. The correct oil is BMW MTF-LT-4
Some people have used Red Line's synthetic ATF called: D4 ATF or D6 ATF. The D6 ATF is closer to the BMW MTF-LT-4 specs. ie: the D6 is thinner gear oil than their D4. I used D4 in my old e36 and it worked fine. But in my old e36 BMW spec'd MTF-LT-2 I believe. I am going to use the BMW MTF-LT-4 in my trans just in case I have to make any warranty claim with my tranny. But that is highly unlikely. Dackel |
