Official Melbourne Cruise to Archies Creek (Saturday 22nd Jan 10:30am)
This is finally the opportunity to meet many fellow BMW enthusiasts from the 1Addict, e90post and M3 Post forums in Melbourne!
I'm temporarily taken over the reigns from OREY for the first meet but these meets are definitely a great way to meet others who share a same passion for the brands and more importantly the cars! As per usual, it is important to just quickly state that we are there to admire and respect both the cars and their owners. Also please stay safe and within the boundaries of the law (going outside is at your own risk!) I'd strongly suggest anyone that has UHF radios takes them as well, and if possible have the lead and tail cars with GOOD radios (i.e. 5W units, not the 0.5w toys from Dick Smith). We used to use them on the MINI club runs and it makes things a lot easier (and safer).
and the Drive Day Etiquette we used to emphasise: DRIVE DAY ETIQUETTE • If you are uncomfortable with the speed then slow down and go at your own pace, advise the lead driver that they are going too fast for you at the next stop or via mobile/UHF radio. • Stick to the laws of the road. Police will look out for a large number of cars together and joyfully pounce on illegal driving - in particular speed limits within urban areas. • Follow the road rules and most importantly, be extremely courteous to other road users. It is important to show others that car owners and friends care. • Show respect for other road users and pedestrians. That includes other people on the drive with you. Please do not try and pass the lead car. • Bear in mind that just because the car in front has passed a hazard does not mean you can! Your carsmay look the same, but different tyres, or being in a different gear, can have a profound effect on handling. • Slow down for horses, cyclists, and pedestrians. Give them plenty of room when overtaking. • Whenever the group stops, if at all feasible, make sure you try to pull completely off the road. Please be aware of the conditions around you, do not stop on the crest of a hill for example, or on a crossing. If there is not enough room for you to stop with the group, pass the group and find somewhere safe to stop. We will find you. • Use your indicators in plenty of time to guide cars in the group, as well as other road users. • If you want the group to stop, flash your headlights. If the car behind flashes its headlights, flash yours until the leader pulls over. • When the group passes through a congested area, it should try to stop as soon as safely practicable to regroup before any turns are made. Be aware of those around you. • Expect the unexpected! Who knows what is around the next corner, make sure you will be able to stop safely, especially in less than perfect conditions. • Do not tailgate the car in front of you - imagine the despair of you and your fellow runner if you do not brake in time. This act is the most common cause for accidents on car runs. |

Doesn't look like a very lively drive - it's all freeway. Something with a mountain climb and a few twisting roads would be more enjoyable for a spirited drive... Why this particular destination?

I'm told there are a few fun parts but as long as we get people along we can decide to change the destination on the day!

Just looking at the directions on Google Maps and although there seem to be a few winding roads around the area, it's still 1.5 hours to get there by freeway. In my opinion that doesn't make for much of a fun drive.
Instead, I'd recommend an area that many of us have done before, such as the route from Eltham to Kinglake, Healesville and Marysville etc. The roads are also fairly quiet during summer (spring is peak) and they're more fun to drive. Those areas are also still recovering from the bushfires two years ago, so can do with every "tourist" dollar that's spent in their towns. Totally agree with MickyD's suggestions and tips - something we should all take on board. Anyone else have an opinion?

Happy to change on the day, I'd rather the group come to the agreement as a whole, but I was also hoping we could get some happy snaps at the meet and also along the way! Come on 1ers sign up and how the love!

'WAY' Will you be coming along? I'd really like to see your M3! Perhaps you'd consider selling when your new ones arrive this year?

Oh that's a shame, would have been nice to see you stretch the legs of the M3 a little!

Again, here's my thoughts: I'm not keen on driving an hour and a half on a boring freeway to have lunch in a fine dining restaurant where the mains are $35+.
I'd much rather spend that time enjoying some great winding roads and stopping for a more relaxed lunch like a burger or something. For those interested in a drive day, which option would you prefer? Option 1 is driving to Archies Creek via the freeway for an expensive lunch. Option 2 is driving through Eltham, Kinglake, Healesville and Marysville, stopping in Marysville for lunch and injecting the town with some much needed tourist money to help them rebuild their community. Please respond with your preference so we can get this organised before Friday.
