Where did you hear this? The IS uses a shortened platform from the GS which was developed specifically for it as midsized FR/F4 platform.

I think Focus was just emphasizing the word "is" rather than talking about the ISx50 models

I heard this directly from toyota when I used to sell them. When we did our corporate training it was a "key point" to help as a sales tactic to sell the corolla. Like "hey if the chassis is good enough to use in a lexus sports car, imagine how great it has to be for your daily commute in this bland 4 door, eco box!"

Yeah people confuse this all the time..its on a shortened and modified GS chassis...just like the next one should be. Although I hear it might ride on Toyota's FT-86 platform. But anyways...I'd rather have the 1series for what it gives and offers. I priced a CT200h and an IS and the both cross the 35k threshold without much effort. A 128i with sport and convenience + Steptronic doesnt cross 35k....its like 34.75k

TrueDelta puts the 135 and 128 together in their reliability data due to insufficient people reporting information to them (some of you should sign up, it's free and pretty painless). The combined score is around 50. This is trips to the dealer per year per 100 cars. It is hurt by a couple small recalls (insulation around seat belts was one and another was sealing of tail lights or something like that) and the 135 HPFP issue. In the 3 series, the 328 and 335 are separated. The 328i is about 20 and the 335 up around 50. Nothing is much better than 20. They didn't have data on the Lexus IS. The drivetrain of the 328 and 128 is the same as are a bunch of other pieces. So I think looking at 328 data is a legetimate way to get an idea of 128 reliability.

Maybe that sort of data will help you with your parents. If you sign up on TrueDelta you can get access to their database to put together your argument.

I'll check this out. I talked to someone who has 123k miles on his '02 325i and he told me he hasnt had all these issues people talk about or issues I had on my '02 352i before the IS250. I'm willing to sacrifice a little to get back with BMW again....Lexus isnt for a 23 year old.

I've had an 02 330i since 2005. No electrical issues except for the known tail light ground issue and that was easily dealt with.
