Curb Weight

Curb weight is calculated a full tank of gasoline, no passengers and no cargo.....so, the fellow who initially calculated ~3200lbs is correct. 3274 lbs....
Making this ONE SWEET RIDE!

I guess I'm never going to win this argument seeing it's me against the whole forum... Sorry, I guess the idea of a 3000lb car with 300hp is just plain stupid and wouldn't be fun to drive at all :iono:
Not the whole forum....
I'm 100000% in your corner.

I'm looking for something to complement my Z4M;
& if this car isn't ~3200lb or less I'm done with it.

Btw, I've seen a lot of people over the past couple days on other forums be turned completely off when they saw the 1560 kg. I'm tired of informing. The Devil is in the details.
I am still uncertain if the calculations are right. If we compare apples to apples the UK has 335i listed at 1600kg and the 135i at 1560kg that means the 135i is only 88lbs lighter than the 335i. Comparatively this is shocking consider the 135i is smaller.

Base on your calculation the weight of the 135i will be at 3274 but applying the same method to 335i it will put 335i some where in the same ball park as well. In fact 335i will probably have a advantage because it has a bigger gas tank. Therefore, a slightly larger portion of its 1600kg unladen weight comes from gas, but not its true mass. This will narrow the mass gap between the 1 and 3s.

What's even more shocking and might annoy 335i driver is the UK 530i weights only 5kg, at 1605kg, more than the 335i.

On BMW NA website the weight difference between 535i and 335i is around 80lbs just like the weight difference between 335i and 135i. If your calculation is correct then the true weight of 135i is 3274lb, 335i 3354lbs and the 535i is 3434lbs.

Car & Driver weighed their 335i coupe for the Lightning lap around 3360lbs, so that seems about right. I think somebody else said (not sure which forum) that as the model line goes up, BMW puts more money into lighter weigh materials. It makes sense and the relatively minute weight differences despite size differences seem to back that up.

BMW quote the 335i as 1,600Kg (with manual transmission) and the 135i as 1,560Kg.

It means that the 135i is 40Kg lighter - simple as that - no matter what destination country (any changes for specific country will be applied across the range, with a similar effect on weight).

BMW purposely made the 135i heavier at the rear in order to maintain a 50:50 weight distribution.

The bottom line is that the 135i will be a lighter, faster, cheaper car than the 335i (135i will probably de-value faster too).

So would it be safe to assume that in about two years after it's debut, I should be able to find a 135i with navigation here in the US for under $34,000?

I would certainly hope so, but if you are looking for a deal try to minimize the options.

If I have to explain that a tossable vehicle is, then you really wouldn't understand anyways...

It's not about performance figures... The 2002's and early 911's were hardly powerhouses... But what they lacked in hp they more than made up for in being lightweight... and you could throw those cars around corners.

It's not about 1/4 mile times, it's about driving dynamics...

I'm not really interested in the 135... I am considering the 128 because I had hoped it would be a cheap, lightweight, rwd vehicle... With lightweight crossed off the list, I'm hoping that pricing will be attractive... At least I know the 1-series will be rwd, but 1 out of 3 ain't gonna cut for me... 2 out of 3 might tho'. Hopefully I won't be as disappointed with pricing as I am with the weight.
I have three words for you: BMW E30 318iS

I wonder what options will be available in the US? For example, I'd love to get the Monaco Blue or Anthracite Network cloth interior and the full-on nav / iDrive delete option...

And is anyone else hoping that it'll be possible in 2-3 years to get an aftermarket Quaife LSD for the 1-series?

Won't take that long - already one for 335i and they use the same diff, afaik. Cost is $1,595 + install. Clutch type units are better for track but much pricier. Can get them at www.turnermotorsports.com

The only issue I see with an aftermarket LSD diff is the bit regarding the 'double helical ball bearing' gears in the diff that promote lower temps and less gear lube subsequently. That's hidden somewhere in the press release. If that's the same diff as the 335i - then Quaife it is!!

How are clutches better than gear types? Plus, in the rest of the automotive world it has been my experience that clutch types were cheaper. Why is it different here?

Anyone care to speculate on the 0-60 time you think the 135 will do?....the BMW stated 5.3 is a bit disappointing for me.....I'm truly hoping for a 5.0 or slightly sub 5.0.....335 coupe in R&T tested at 4.8, why not the 135?....unless detuned?????

Shouldn't be much difference - the weight difference may be about 200 lbs between the two cars in the 135's favor. FWIW, R&T's 0-60 numbers are generally conservative also.

What impresses me about this engine in the car will be the 50-70 times, that's the difference between a pass being completed comfortably on a two lane road or the attempt being a bit of a fright.

you are using different specs. What does BMW claim as 0-60 for the 335i? (I think it is 5.5 sec) then compare that to the stated specs for the 135i
