I'm going to purchase an '08-'09 135i convertible and was was wondering what opinions/experience people have had with the Nav/idrive system. To be or not to be...

It's pretty 'meh' in my opinion. At the end of the day, i'd rather nav than no nav, but there are systems out there (built in and stand alone) that are much better. Every now and then mine will act screwy and freeze, but with some stern talking to it works again after a minute or so. Idrive is....an acquired taste.

I have iDrive in my car. The nav routing seems a little weird, and the learning curve can be steep, but overall I like it.

For me the one killer feature is the ability to send destinations to the car via google maps (on desktop or phone). I hate typing in destinations, and I much prefer google's POI database to any nav system's that I've used.

Note that there's two different versions of iDrive in our 1ers. The 2008 models (and possible some early 2009 builds?) use an earlier version of idrive and have a screen that rotates closed. Later models have a newer version with a fixed screen and more buttons around the iDrive controller.

Keep in mind that being out of warranty any gremlins in your nav system will be expensive to fix. I believe if you buy the extended warranty it's more expensive if you have nav.

I didn't want to ante up the $2500 when I bought mine new a few months ago. I have it in my other car and sometimes I miss it but it's not a deal breaker. If you see the car you want at a price you want I wouldn't not buy it because it didn't have nav.

A positive statement out of three negative ones! Took me a minute...

My wife and I have both had cars with nav - and it has turned out that if you want to update it costs more than it would cost to purchase a top-level Garmin - so no, we no longer want factory NAV on our cars. I would instead purchase the integrated Garmin thingy BMW has, I think.

My Garmin is hard wired; a hardwire is planned for our Santa Fe (which has outdated nav).

I got Nav in my 135i but I didn't want it. Basically why I got it was because this 135i was the only 6spd in the state (WA). The next closest one was in CA so we got this one anyways as I didn't want to wait a couple of weeks to get the car and was using the wife's car to go to work in. It's only taken me to my destination 2 times out of the 4 or 5 times we've used it and it's not that great of a Nav neither. It doesn't say certain things like portable Nav's do, like your destination is on the left or stay left at the fork.

I will never get another car with Nav again, unless its a standard feature like the CTS-V has. I use my Android with the Google Maps app more than the Nav. Save the extra $$$ it takes to get a car, new or used, and buy a portable GPS.

You could sell your portable GPS every couple of years and buy a new portable GPS way cheaper than it cost to buy the updates.

I would stay FAR away from the 2008 nav but the 2009+ system is pretty nice. I you plan to use it exclusively as a navigation unit, it's a huge waste of money since that aspect is probably the worst feature, but the idrive system is otherwise indispensable in my opinion. If you use your iPod for music, navigation is a snap and the vehicle info is excellent. I actually like the traffic info and find it to be about 75% accurate. Each time I get a base model 3 series as a loaner, I miss the idrive the most for my daily uses. I would definitely seek it out as you rarely have people bitching that they got it, unless they rely heavily on the actualy navigation feature.

Got it as it was the only CPO I could find with the other features I wanted. Have to admit, I feel lost when I don't have it. Makes using all the car features much easier, the traffic is good and I've had good luck with the routing. And I do love how I can send maps from my computer and have them waiting for me, or it'll map from my phone contacts.

Not sure I'd pay for it new but certainly will consider next time I'm shopping.

Also, a friend has the 08 Nav, and it's not user friendly at all.

Don't have it and don't miss it. Have had it on previous cars, but don't care if I have it again.

The nav is atrocious - class-action bad, IMHO. The rest of the iDrive is pretty mediocre.

NOT.

Overpriced and just another thing to go wrong in a car with too much electronics already (IMO).

It's about the driving, not the gadgets... Less is more.

Nav features lot of fucntions not just map alone, real time traffic info and you can send map info from your PC...... Get it you won't regret.

I dunno...unless your a "traveling salesman" or you're constantly driving into unfamiliar territory, I think a nav is a total waste.
I understand traffic updates and some of the other bells & whistles are OK, but I don't get it. If you're doing a couple/few vacations
a year and you just can't get there without a nav (geez...how did we ever find our destinations before?), buy a Garmin or whatever
for a buck and a half. They work better, update a lot easier (and cheaper) and don't cost a fortune upfront.

I have it on my 09 135i but I bought the car used with 20,000 mies on it over a year ago. I must say it is a cool feature and I am glad it's there but not sure it's worth the $2500.00 price tag on new cars.

Don't get nav. It makes the dashboard look hideous and the system is a POS.

My car is an '08 with nav and I never use it. I use my smartphone if I need directions.

Not to mention that it died as I was driving tonight.

The 2008 system was definitely a POS.

-Didnt want the dash hump
-Didnt want to pay much more than its actually worth
-Heard horror stories about idrive
-Expensive to fix/update down the road
-Have new handheld that does just as good or better a job
that can be replaced much more cheaply with newest technology than the built in unit
