I'm bit puzzled why some folks running the 225 / 255s michelin Pilot Super sports are having rubbing problems with their 135s ????
I plan to use the stock rims which are 261s but in the future plan to get the VMR 710 18 x 8.5 ET45 and 18 x 9.5 ET 50.
Thanks for the clarifications

The rears can be kind of odd. I had slight rubbing with 255s but only on one side. I ended up rolling the fenders slightly - no more problems.

I also have 135 M.
Is is okay with use this set up? Front: 215/40/18 Rear: 255/35/18.
I already replaced a front tire with Continental Extreme Contact all season same size as RFT. I can't find all season tire for rear 245/35/18 so i decide to go with 255/35/18 instead.
Is is really okay to go with this setup?

Yes, but you will increase your understeer. Not a big deal if you're not hot into corners, or dont track or auto-X your car.

Wouldn't a 225/245 set up be the best solution to address the understeer and avoid any rear rubbing risk? Why isn't this the preferred set up? Obviously going square would be the best for understeer control, but a 225/245 seems like a good compromise of aesthetics and driving dynamics?

Thoughts.

This is exactly what most people should be doing if they want to reduce understeer. The reason for the 255 rears trend is there are more, and better, tire options in that sizing. But scientifically speaking, adding lateral grip to both ends (wider and stickier rubber) does nothing to affect the handling balance of the car. Adding grip at the front and leaving the rear alone is the only way to change the understeer tendency (which frankly I think is way over-exaggerated on this forum based on my experience tracking my bone stock M-Sport).

If you can find them in stock, Tire Rack does list Kuhmo Ecsta XS in 225/245 (the rears are back ordered), which is a pretty darn good tire especially at that price.

First off, sorry for kind of jacking this thread with this question, but I could only find another discussion with the setup I'm curious about in the e90post forum.

I want to first explain that here in PR the roads are terrible, and every single pot hole has the capacity to destroy your rims. Having said that, I am curious if a 225/45/18f & 255/40/18r is doable on 261M package Wheels.

Thanks a lot in advance guys! Lots to learn here!

PD. Wanted to add that as of this moment I don't track my car (AutoX/Time attack etc), just do a drag strip night every couple of months (just two or three passes).

I suffered the same quandary until last October. The overall answer is the new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3. Available in OEM spec staggered sizes. Enjoy!

No...stock sizes 215/40 and 245/35. I had heard about the ability to go wider but I am glad I did not. Here's why: the PSS A/3's are actually slightly wider than the OEM Bridgestone Run flats. With my 'Stones I ran a set of VAC spacers, and I had the tire dealer re-install them with the PSS A/3's. I had to go back and have the spacers removed. As I pulled in my driveway the wheel deflection caused my rear tires to rub. I also noticed that symptom again on the way back to the dealer, as I crossed a wavy intersection.

I have no desire to roll my fenders, and I would advise anyone interested in running the PSS A/3's to stick to the OEM staggered spec.

As for performance, I live in the northeast where the weather has been cold and wet. I use my SUV in the snow but these PSS A/3's are AMAZING in the cold and wet.

OH ok Thanks, but I'm trying to actually go taller (and maybe wider). It's just considering the horrible road conditions here. Made me think going taller might feel a bit better day to day...but I guess I'll stick to OEM.

You would be amazed at how much more the A/S 3's cushion your ride than the Bridgestone run flats do. I don't even sense the gap /bump between my driveway and my garage floor anymore.

225/255 PSS with no rubbing

I run 225/255 PSS on 261's with no rubbing- stock suspension. Night and day diff from the RFT. Squishiness under acceleration - so new M3 bushings this summer. TP's are 34/36 F/R which is what I believe the Tire Rack people run with a similar set up. Tire wear on the shoulders typical with assertive driving and stock camber.
I am considering 235/265 for my next purchase.

Prob a better use for everyday driving then people put on 225/255 setup for more grip and looks .. Like an m3 for example they put a 265 rear and u can run a 295 on that exact tire it's mainly for grip and looks

Meant to point out: the A/S 3's are naturally a wee bit taller because they are All Season tires - ultra high performance all season, according to Tire Rack. Great category!

A good amount of us are also running 235/40-18 up front (on stock 7.5"). Under most manufacturer's recommended 8-9.5" wheel width with no perceived ill effects. Not ideal...but helps with the understeer, and improves the ride.

That width/aspect ratio was stock on an M3 at one point (235/40 on 7.5"), so it's not exactly reckless.
