Winter Tires

Sad day. Just made my appointment to get my winter wheel/tires mounted in mid November. I will miss my summer wheel/tires and look forward to mid April.

That's one negative joy of driving a rear wheel drive car in the Northeast. I usually switch mine on black Friday and hang the x-mass lights.

That's why my favorite holiday is St. Patrick's day. Winter is on the decline or gone, although there have been some surprises.

The last Saturday in March has been pretty safe to switch back to summer shoes.

Ha! Holding out until December sometime! That said, I find winter driving a different kind of fun at slow speeds around town...can be an excuse to have a little fun at safe moments.

Can't you get away with a set of all seasons that are good in the snow when driving on flat roads; i.e. cont DWS. I used to live in the san bern mountains in socal and driving up snow covered hills it requires either chains/cables on the drive wheels, or all wheel drive with snow tires; snow tires and rwd doesn't matter you aren't getting up a steep ass hill covered in inches of snow. Once I was up in town I could drive around in 2-3" of snow with just some kumho 4x all seasons and no chains/cables.

The roads were always good the day after a storm; the snow plows and the de-icing chemicals they throw around worked great.

Maybe I'm talking out my ass, but I'd rather be driving on some flat road in the mid west than some steep ass hill with no guard rail trying to get up or down san bernadino mountains covered in snow/ice.

You guys in the mid west/east coast always make a big deal about having to change wheels/tires out, but isn't it mostly flat? You guys get 5ft of snow dumped on you every weekend or what?

**If anyone wanted to know what chains/cables I used it was SCC Z chains. They cleared the stock wheel gap, suspension, etc. whatever perfectly.

All weather just are not good enough in the winter in paces like the Midwest, it is not only about getting traction but holding in curves and braking distances. I feel 10x safer in my RWD with winter tires than with my former VW R32 (AWD) that was equipped with all seasons. Winter tires are not only better in the snow, they give you a significant difference at low temperature on dry pavement. Putting a set of good winter tires is for me a small price to pay to keep enjoying my car all year round

I just bought a 128i with Sport package - summer tires. I live in Maryland so consider all-season M&S tires a good compromise for me. Eventually those would supersede the run-flat OEMs when the latter are worn out, until then swap out spring and fall. Do you think this makes sense, rather than buy new wheels?

I note from earlier posts that some replace their tires on the sport package (different tire size front and back) with same size tires all around. Will this induce oversteer or other handling issues? Said another way, one thread said that BMW puts the wider tires on back to induce understeer. True?

Any perspective would be most appreciated.

Sometimes it feels like it. Or you get an inch every day for a week straight. Even when it's not snowing, it can take days before things are totally clear. They are plowed and such yes but still have patches around. Low temps don't just hit with a storm and last a few days, it'll stay single digits for weeks straight which means nothing melts if there's not enough sun / wind to take it straight to sublimation.

Also, snow tires stay soft in real cold temps, more so than all seasons and much more so than straight summer performance tires. Even when it's totally dry out, if it's cold you can light your summer tires up across an entire intersection and stop only when you finally feel like it. They're like little round rolling bricks.

Anyhow, LOL, yeah we get crap driving conditions. You'd have to live here I guess to really know.

I guess if you're talking about someone who lives in rural Iowa or Illinois, then you might have a point. Should you live in Minneapolis when it snows and you have to go to work, you need to deal with a million other drivers in a metro area of 3.2M people (think Orange County). We had 1/4 inch of snow today that fell during the AM rush hour. A coworker who normally has a 10-12 minute commute, had his commute take 45 minutes. This was due to all the accidents and spinouts. Fortunately, this is my last winter in MN, as I'm relocating to Orange County the 1st week of January.

I have winter tires mounted on wheels with TPMS. I also have a floor jack and can swap my wheels/tires over in less than 30 min. with everything put away. If the weather looks good for about a week or more I will swap to the summer wheel/tires. That works well for me and saves my winter setup a little dry pavement wear.

I just ordered my winters from tirerack. I've been looking for a storage service for my summers and all I could find was this new service called Switch and Store. Interesting service. Might give it a try.

Anyone know of any other options? BMW manhattan was trying to rip me off by charging me $1000 for storage. Nuts.

Probably got to put mine on this weekend. Just as well, I have the take it down a notch in the morning with the PSSs now that it's in the low 40s.

Well, just got back from the dealer after having my winter wheels/tires installed and my M wheels/summer tires stored. My dealer stores the off-season tires for free as long as you purchase the winter wheels/tires from them. The style 141 wheels are not the M wheels that came with the M sport package, but they are not bad. The Goodyear Ultra Grip GW-3 tires also are not bad. Still can't wait for Spring to get back to "normal".

Had a nail in one of the PSSs so on went the winter wheels. The PSSs are also pretty worn and one of the Forgestars is noticeably bent so I'm thinkning all new wheels this spring (with new PSSs).

I too put my Blizzak LM60s on a week or two ago. My run flats were so worn out, it was getting dangerous. This is my first time on winter tires, they're so squishy under braking and turns!

I use the OEMs with a square set of Michelin Alpinas. Works fine, even still lets me push it. Miss a proper big set of PSSs though.
