It appears there are other devices that will connect the IPOD to the e90:

It's not available yet for the BMW and since it will require coding, it's not clear how it will be installed. BMW dealers won't code the car for a CD changer if there is none present.

Does anyone know if you must check "CD Changer Preparation" on the options list when ordering the car if you intend to buy the ipod kit at the dealer afterwards?

Probably.

Fortunately, that is standard in U.S. cars.

Pricing is not yet out. BMW NA has not finalized this so we will know soon.

It is a bunch of BS as no price has been released. The dealership is talking out their ass.

On Logic 7, is there an appreciable difference in sound quality between a file on the iPod and a file on a CD?

I have tested the sound quality of my iPod vs. CD of the same music, on my 545i with Logic 7. The sound quality difference is noticable. The bass response on CD is much clearer and more distinct. I have tested this with uncompressed audio, lossless audio (apple lossless), and 192 k MP3.

I made a minor modification to the AUX cable, by removing the caps/resistors from the line... and this improved the bass response for the AUX input. However, CD sources are still noticably cleaner.

I am using a 60 gig iPod color (4th Gen) & a Monster Cable car charger with line output.

Frankly, I don't think the OEM interface will be worth the price... at least not for me. I sincerely doubt there will be any appreciable difference in sound quality, and I personally don't touch the iPod often to change music selections. So being able to access it through iDrive isn't a huge boon for me.

Does anybody know how much the old e46 interfaces cost? My dealer really likes to rape for any kind of install/programming. I almost envision this as a $150-$200 cable, which arguably isn't too bad, but then another $200-250 for installation and programming. Which is unfortunate, because then BMW will be scratching their heads wondering why the interface that people'd been screaming for isn't selling.

I hope I'm wrong. But it seems short-sighted to create an adapter that costs more than the piece of kit you're trying to adapt. Especially when all the adapter is supplying is marginally better sound quality and the ability to move tracks using the steering wheel controls. The display is neat, but if I'm going to take my eyes off the road I can just as easily glance at my ipod sitting in the tray as my head unit.

I'd still mess with the deaier. Get him to produce a price sheet or justify the number.

At this point since BMWNA is covering an entire software install anyway and this is the biggest part of the overall cost, the price should only be for the actual adapter itself. However actual implementation will be interesting.

They can't produce a pricesheet since there is none. They are guessing.

Re the installation, the total price is not only for the adapter but also for the installation of the adapter.

Exactly.. I figured they'll probably charge a couple hours of labor for installation at $120 per hour.

Still, I'm facing a dilemma here. I want to have this ASAP because I use my iPod heavily in the car. (I bought it spefically for the car. I don't listen to portable music othersie) But at the same time I want to make sure the dealership guys have some experience installing the kit before working on my car.

I know. I just don't like the tactics I read. I assume that the actual installation process is fairly simple unless you tell me they have to disassemble the dash completely to plug it in.
