Misfires & coil packs & spark plugs

After installing my fmic and exhaust and upping my Cobb tune, I now get misfires on cylinder 3. I swapped coil packs on cylinder 2&3 and the misfires now happen on cylinder 2 - so it looks like it is the coil pack.

Should I just replace the 1 or get a full set?

Anyone where to source these at a good price?

What is the general consensus on spark plugs? I have read varying opinions on whether to get the Bosch OEM ones, or the Bosch BMW stamped ones.

Unfortunately there is no concrete evidence to suggest the Bosch plugs are inferior to the BMW oem ones. However, there are anecdotal threads out there which seem to show that BMW oem runs more smoothly with less issues.

With regards to the coils, some will say change them all - you're safeguarding against another one failing. But for me it's, if it ain't broke why fix it? You never know the lifespan of these things.

Agreed.

I blew a coil in my Z4M with 26k miles on it. Replaced just that cylinder and I'm now at 34k and still fine.

If you want to purchase another one to keep in the trunk, that may be a good idea. Swapping them are fairly easy

I think you need to consider how many km's you have travelled so far as well. I've always ended up replacing all 6 plugs and coils.

arent the bmw plugs/coils bosch ones painted with BMW instead of Bosch?

Only reason id change all it the pita getting all the crap off to get to the coils/plugs

Bosch will do just fine.

ECS even say that the Genuine BMW ones are Bosch Part number xxx

Matt if you need them I can send you 6 Bosch plugs for $100 and a coil pack for $60, add $10-13 for postage depending on number of coils ordered.

Makes my contemplate whether it's worth the hassles to mod my car as it seems once power mod is done, the axillary parts of the engine (I know the engine itself is strong)gives up...BMW seems to engineer the car to have small tolerance for power upgrade.

Im having the same issue with my car.

I just ordered a full set of sparks and a single coil from Stu and BMR for the time being.
I'll replace the rest of the coils when the start to fail.

Gee if you are worried about the few small issues we have with a tuned
N54/55 best not to mod.

considering coils and plugs are consumable items and relatively cheap, I think you're going a bit overboard with that statement!!! Drive a tuned car, it is definitely worth it!

Agreed. I think for most of us who experience this is because the life of our sparks/coils are nearing the end of the life cycle.

you see...it's not the first time I own a modded car...I had 4 other modded cars before and none of them required any coil replacement even to 150K km so I was a bit put off by this coil pack business...anyway looks not too bad an issue...

Mate your not alone...

I've had a procede installed and can only run map 1, even then I'm getting misfires.

The guys at Advan recommended I replace coils and plugs and that should be problem solved.

I just clocked 40,000km.

Without the maps, all works fine though... These teething issues are expected.

Looks like the higher boost and higher temperature from a tune are stressing the weak stock coil and plugs to an early failure...there seems to be no collection of data on how long a new set of stock coils and plugs will last on a tuned N54...

My bad coil i pulled out was "bent" and leaning to one side. lmfao. that must have been some REALLY bad misfiring!

I had my LPFP, coil pack #4 both go out AND a nail in the tire. Talk about trying to diagnose an issue with all the other BS going on. Now that I am back with a smile on my face i think the water pump might be on it's way out, along with the battery AND the waste-gates are rattling like crazy.

Time to sell? lol...

I'm getting misfires when under load (ie fourth gear, 80km/h, foot down). High revs are fine. The plugs are about 10,000km old, coils 5,000km. Could it be the HPFP?

It has misfired on cylinders 6 and then 5 when it does throw a code. However mostly it doesn't register a code so it's getting frustrating working it out. I'm running a JB4 with Map 5.
