2010 1 series... so we just don't get alarms?

I'm at the dealership waiting on service to replace my amp (no audio from right side of car) and am flipping through the 1 series brochure. It shows the clown nose and lists an alarm. This is for the 2012 cars I'm guessing. I believe the earlier 1's had alarm options. So why on earth would the 2010/11 cars not have it?

The light is there... which is completely useless without an alarm (or possibly some sneaky coding.) My wife really just wants audible confirmation of the car being locked when she leaves. That seems like a reasonable request to me! The locks are so quiet that you don't hear them otherwise.

Anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this?

Thanks!
Adam

I have a 2010 and there is a loud mechanical noise when I lock the car. Also try going into the computer in the car.

It is outragious a $40k car does not have an alarm... But its bmw and you get nothing for your money.

Bit of a thread jack - is there a way to make the parking lights flash every time you hit the lock button (not just when the car is actually locking)? Nice to know it got the lock command when I'm a good distance away and can't recall if I locked it when I got out. (And no iDrive if that matters)

Find someone who can change codes in the car. I have mine programmed to fold in the mirrors if I hold the lock button down. I can just glance at the car and see if it's locked. FWIW, my remote BARELY works more than 10' from the car and 20' - forget it.

It baffles me that they don't even prewire it like past BMWs. I always installed my alarm on all my E46s. BMW sometimes cheaps out just like the trunk keyhole delete. Totally uncalled for.

The 2011 on line manual describes the optional alarm on page 32. It appears to be same as the one available for my '08.

Doesn't BMW assist provide tracking of some sort?

I have a trunk keyhole on my 2009 135i? It's located on the right side of the rear license plate lights under the deck lid.

i think they cut that in MY 2010.

i guess it's a problem if your battery dies, but I guess if that happens, roadside assistance is paying me a trip regardless

AFAIK, the 2010 models weren't pre-wired for the alarm and that's the problem; i.e., you could only get it as a factory option and it couldn't be retrofitted. Though, if you're willing to do all the wiring, I'm sure it can physically be retrofitted. For my '08, it was as simple as installing the alarm module (left rear wheel well) and the interior sensor (rear overhead light console) and then only a coding change was needed. It took about 35 minutes total.

P.S. The alarm doesn't really do much in terms of theft prevention. The engine immobilizer does that and it's standard across all modern BMWs. The alarm does help with theft deterrance, though alarms aren't really a deterrent for someone who means business. Besides, by the time the alarm goes off and people start acknowledging it, the thief has probably already gotten what he or she wants out of the car. Stealing the car is another story, and again, that's where the standard engine immobilizer comes in. I do, however, like the audible lock and unlock confirmation of the alarm...and the blinking clown nose.

What AW128i said. You had to order the alarm as a factory installed option. My 2010 has it because I ordered it.

I like the alarm because it includes the glass breaker sensor, which is nice especially if you have a radar in the car. I'm going on my 1st year of ownership without the alarm and to tell you the truth I don't think it's a big deal. I rather spend the $$$ on something else like the CF spoiler or the mirrors.

if someone wants to swipe your radar detector, I couldn't see the alarm stopping them at that point. The window is already broken.

But I agree, spend the money on something else. I'm sure BMW bends you over for it.

I have a 2011, with no alarm and no clown nose. My e46 has the clown nose, without the alarm, and I miss that. It blinks when the car is locked, even without an alarm. Very handy for quickly looking to see if the car is locked. Also, probably causes some to think there is an alarm.

I'd pay for an alarm retrofit, to get the clown nose back. Not sure why, but I really do miss it, for more than just the reasons I mentioned.

That sounds kinda useful. Any idea how to make it do that on a 1er?

Not sure if it is possible. With the e46, it was just a dealer programming option.

BMW got away with cost cutting by not installed the pre-wire on some models, this was a huge saving for them since most people will not install the alarm option and makes no sense to have the clown nose & pre-wire on the vehicle.
