130kmh limit petition on change.org

Not that these things really matter other than make a newspaper article, I do still feel obliged to sign and share this with everyone!

https://www.change.org/petitions/rai...lower-the-toll

Quote:
Friends, countrymen, fellow travellers – it’s time to act!
After years of travelling in the slow lane, we need a higher speed limit. If countries in Europe – where people average far fewer kilometres a year than we do – can cope with a 130km/h limit, then why can’t we? Fatigue, microsleeps, we’re told that these things are killers, so let’s do something about it, and Raise the Limit to Lower the Toll.*
Welcome to our campaign – a crusade designed to increase the limit to 130km/h on our best highways, thus leading to less fatigue-related crashes on our roads.*
For too long, speed has been demonised in a simplistic and silly fashion, and to change this, we need your help.*
Head to our Facebook page to sign our petition to the Federal Minister for Roads, and have your say.*
It’s time for sensible speed limits. Make your voice count.*
Thoughts?

The Australian Motoring Enthusiasts Party has won a seat in the Federal Senate.

Surely this issue forms close to 99% of their policy platform.

Signed. With my new Kwaka I'm going to need at least a 130 limit.

I would never sign such a petition. 130 km/h is too fast for the goat tracks we call roads here, even the most modern of our freeways. In my opinion, you need at least 4 lanes each way, and then you need immaculate surfaces properly maintained to go with it to support higher speed limits. If you feel the need for speed, get thee hence to a track.

Unfortunately, Australia is a country with a relatively small population spread over vast distances. There will never be the money available to produce European quality roads here.

You don't think sections of the Hume is capable of 130kmph?

I was in Italy earlier this year. I'm not even sure what the speed limit was most of the time I just drove at a speed that felt safe and flowed with the rest of traffic. This was mostly around 130kmh.

Speed limits should feel fast and people should drive under them naturally, not have to stare at the speedo to make sure they don't creep over.

Seriously? There are ab-sol-utely no roads, in the whole of the country (apart of course from the NT where 130 is legal on many highways), that you don't feel it's safe to drive at 130 in a modern vehicle?? Even on a bright clear day with no other vehicles in sight for many kilometres??? Have you driven on some of our more remote straight line highways????
I'm sorry, but this is just laughable.

Signed.

Did you also noticed a distinct lack of fixed speed cameras or mobile radars?

I spotted one mobile radar in my 4 weeks of driving through Italy!

Doesnt mean you have to drive 130 everywhere.
Give some credit

I lived in Europe for four years, I drove most of Western Europe and Sweden/Finland. Not a single speeding ticket.

4 days back in Perth, I got done whilst slowing down for being 8km/h over by a speed camera sneakily hidden right after the 80km/h sign that changed the speed limit from 100km/h. It was a road well north of Perth surrounded by bushland. No houses, no kids, no people at all!

The only thing more annoying than the revenue raising here is the deplorable standard of driving.

Perth drivers are pretty bad, but the way the police point their radars at you over there, on the on ramps as you come onto the 100kph highways to make sure you don't get up to speed too early, is just deplorable.

Have you ever driven on the autostrade or french motorways? .. they are 2 lanes with no emergency lane and the speed limit is 130 and the cars usually travel even faster. I drove them a couple of months ago and I definitely think our roads are better. However our roads are just too over policed and the driving standards are extremely poor. Its attitude like yours that allows the government to get away with setting ridiculously low speed limits and then blatantly indulging in revenue raising.
