135i Calipers - melted dust boots

Has anyone had the melted dust boots problem and/or the cracked ceramic pucks happen with all stock components?
Like this (not with stock components):

Thanks.

Joe,
is this from last year? all that can be repaired. I know several people had the same problem and they had to rebuild. if I am not mistaken I think Chris had the same problem. maybe he can chime in. maybe worth investing in the titanium shims

I'm wondering if it has happened with a stock setup. From what I've seen/experienced, it only happens with race/track pads. I wasn't clear in my original post - the photo is from a caliper that was used with HT-10 pads.

I'd like to know if doing track events with a 100% stock setup has led to any problems like this.
Thanks.

Joe, I've only seen posts about that problem from people who used race pads without attaching the OEM backing plates. Let's see what Chris says. He did mention that he rebuilt his calipers.

I think everyone agrees now that the OEM backing plates are necessary on track, and probably the titanium shims and splash shield mod too if you use race pads.

I rebuilt one of my calipers. It didn't look this bad but they were really cracked and getting there. It happened while using stock pads and cool carbons. Def would recommend the titanium backing plates if you don't already have them with some proper pads. I should probably rebuild the other as it has some light cracking and such, but I'm waiting b/c next time i'm going to replace the pistons with the stop tech parts so I'll have piece of mind I won't have one crumble.

Maybe a silly question considering I am not a 135i owner. But this happened on stock 135 caliper? Are these different from BMW performance 6pot calipers?

Thanks Chris -
So you're not sure if it is possible to happen with only stock pads?
Thanks.

This picture looks so familiar to me, lol. Actually mine looked a lot worse that this. Fractured ceramic pistons with melted dust boots after using HT-10 pads with no cooling mods. I did rebuiled my front calipers with stoptech aluminum pistons, added some cooling mods with great success. Now i am going to rebuild rear calipers too after two track seasons. Rear calipers dont get as hot as front but i see two dust boots melted partially and one ceramic piston damaged.
I would recommend DTC-70/60 pads instead of HT-10. Use castrol racing brake fluid, ti-shims, splush shieds mod, if you can. I have this set up with no issues on the track and i do drive very hard.
I just received RB two piece front rotos, they are about 5 pounds lighter than stock, and a little thicker. Build quality looks great and i think this mod will make this set up even better

Are you using the vented Ti shims ($$) or the regular shims?

I have the regular shims. I don't remember seeing the ventilated ones when I ordered them two years ago.

0.5 or 1.0mm? Does the 1.0mm fit?
Thanks Gary!

I have the 1mm shims Joe. With stock rotors everything fits fine. Things get tight with the thicker RB rotors i'm running now though.

Hey Chris, I notice it says "We also stock thicker versions of our titanium backing plates for many of our models (1.0mm or 0.040" or thicker). Oftentimes (but not always) this will also fit in your calipers with new pads, particularly if you use a caliper piston spreader."

I didn't order that $200 spreader because it's huge and everyone said we don't need it. But this makes me think it might really help, since we're stuffing in ti shims and losing 2mm for the rotors. Apart from price, what do you think?

I've looked at that expensive thing too Gary, and really with just a little bit of patience you can get them completely pushed in w/o the spreader. This summer when i'm down at my grandfather's farm i'm going to weld up an idea for a cheap piston spreader to help speed things up by a couple mins. Untill you have a race team or a professional garage where you're spreading them several times a day/week I just don't think them worth it. And unless you're putting in brand new pads with everything you won't have an issue. You can always put things together w/o the shims to bed them in.

Is this the $200 spreader?
I would take it for free, sure but probably would not use it, lol. I use my fingers. Faster and easyer IMO.
