My first unlucky moments...

I thought it would be fun to post your first no no's that you've done to your E90. I just had an opportunity to test my new runflats 3 days ago. I ran over a vicious sharp industrial bolt, and apparently punctured my tires. It was late at night so I went home, slept and fixed it the next morning. Cool, but now I have a scar in my heart. Let's call it an initiation to my new car...

It's now officially "broken-in"! Just kidding, I know the pain you must have felt, but hey, it's not your fault and that can happen to anyone. Let us know how much the fix cost you and what they did. I'm curious as to how the runflats differ in terms of repair.

Actually I was surprised to learn that runflat tires are no different from regular tires in terms of repair. A typical two step process is done. A plug for the actual whole from the outside and a industrial patch from the inside is applied. It was a free repair at America's Tire Co.

These were 17" tires.

Thanks for the response! How did you get the tire fixed for free?

Actually, I'm curious. This place never charges for things like tire patch-up, or installing wheels. For my previous two cars, I brought wheels in for them to install, but they never charged me for labor. I wonder why? But I keep going back to them for work. Maybe I should buy something from them eventually.

Run flats shouldn't be repaired if you've driven a long way with no pressure in the tire. If it's just a few miles then you're pretty safe. The steel belts will wear and weaken the tire since they're doing all the work holding the tire up.

On my initial drive in my e90 330i last month I was on I-81 in WV about 3 car lengths behind a semi I was about to pass when he swung too wide in a curve and hit an abandoned car in the emergency lane. He caught the car with the rear wheels of the trailer and spun it around 180 degrees. I hit the brakes and pulled as far left as I could without hitting the median to avoid a shower of glass and car parts. There was one chunk of tire that got picked up by the rear trailer tire and flung directly into the middle of my windshield. Luckily it just landed with a thunk and didn't even leave a mark. I know it's weird, but it reminded of the movie The World According to Garp where in one scene Robin Williams' character Garp and his wife were househunting when a light plane crashed into the house while they watched. Garp insisted that they buy the house since it was "pre-disastered." What worse could happen? So consider your bimmer pre-disastered. I do.

You're really lucky Robert. I had an idiot in a Nissan Xterra today swerve from the left lane (i was in the middle lane, with my indicator on, starting to go to the right lane) all the way to the right lane, with no indication, and crossing more than one lane without even looking in the mirror. What an ass! I almost rear ended him, and i braked pretty hard and was amazed at how the E90 dodged the Nissan. It must have ESP.

I spoke to my dealer. SHe said you can have them repaired with a patch like any other tire. The only thing you have to becareful is not to drive too fast and for too long otherwise you would have to replace them. My recommendation for it, is if it is a slow leak or semi slow, fill it up and then drive to have it removed and patched.

I keep a cheap compressor in the boot/trunk......my tire man told me if you get the flat warning, stop, inflate the tire and drive to a repair shop....that way you get the tire repaired, If you continue to drive on it with no pressure in it, you break down the strengthened sidewalls making a repair non-valid and necessitating replacement........a good tip for the sake of a $15 compressor from costco.....I've had runflats repaired safely and successfully that way.

Guys I think this is a great suggestion... the main problem with running on runflats after a puncture is breaking down the sidewalls, so keeping air in it temporarily with a compressor until you can get patched up will save you from having to buy new tire altogether. Thanks DD!

Hello DD,

It's funny that you mentioned about a compressor because I too kept a small one in the trunk. I got home and pump the tire that was punctured, then I went to the tire place in the morning. I think it would be a great suggestion for everybody. Mine fits perfectly on top of the tool kit.
