Zehr gut! Any details on what the fuel requirements are, and if they are different from those for the 335? I.e., is this engine feasible for the US market for the 2007 model year? I wonder if we might see a 323/328/330 E90 lineup -- I would prefer the labels 325, 330, 330si, but whatever. 270 hp is still not competitive with the IS350, Infinity, Audi, MB V8s etc., but it would be an improvement, especially if the fuel economy is better.

Its been known for years the DI version of the N52 will be named the N53 and will replace the N52 engines. Don’t know exactly when it will be released but Europe is ready for them while the US has some fuel requirements to meet before these can be used. Fleet, any idea on release dates?

They are in the Euro E92 ( EDIT: maybe I was wrong, see post below )
Not shure what all countries will get them.

Not shure what the USA E92 is getting.

The US press release notes valvetronic but no mention of DI. So my guess is the US spec 328 gets the N52 while the 335 gets the N54. No known plans for the N53 in the US, yet. Eventually all N52s will be replaced by the N53 which is basically an N52 with DI (I know I am over simplifying the facts).

And why put it in the coupe file in the first place when one would assume the N53 would be released in all E9x models, and not just the E92.

Hmm, a "newer" engine and NO turbo's??
Whaa...

Sulphur content in US gas fuel is getting quite low and should be 30ppm and lower by this year. DI and "lean burn" should be easily attainable, very soon.

hmmmm.... maybe the N53 engine will make it into the MY08 E60, which is the refresh year for that car.

A 528i with the N53 engine and DI would be a great base engine upgrade over the existing 525i, and would get it to near current N52 530i performance levels. Then a 535i could fit nicely in the pricing lineup between the 528 and the 550. Right now there's only about a $3000 difference between the 525 and 530, but a much larger gap between the 530 and 550. So maybe a 528/535/550 lineup makes sense afterall.

If they do that, and the 528 is the N53/DI, I'd probably go for one of those as opposed to a 535. I think the non-DI 528 would be a tad soft for me, and then I'd probably get the 535.

We probably won't see the N53 engines here until at least 2007, which is when we're slated to see the low-sulfur diesel fuel. I don't know if that'll extend to non-diesel fuel as well, so it could be even later. Shame, really, as I think there's great promise in these new motors. I think one issue with the refined fuels is that it'll push fuel costs even higher and most here would rather have cheap crap gas (for their Hummers and Expeditions) as opposed to more expensive high-quality fuel, but that's neither really here nor there...

Is the release date/SOP for the Euro 330 E92 N53 the same as the 325 & 335 N54?

Those are interesting photos. I recall reading somewhere that the direct injection engines do not get valvetronic.
