Exclamation DIY... How to rid your HVAC of that funky smell...

SONAX KlimaPowerCleaner antibakteriell
Name: 41RNgr0CurL._SS500_.jpg

So the other day I was in my German parts store(buying brakes for my e39)... and I saw this product from SONAX at the ordering counter. While my AC system in my 135i works fine and does not smell at all... Some of you might recall I have a old(er) e39 535iA.

My e39 has some "funky" smells inside the car. At first i suspected the former owner was a smoker... even though he said he wasn't. But the more I drove the car the more I thought something was "growing" inside the HVAC system.

I saw this new product from SONAX #03231000 KlimaPowerCleaner antibakteriell and I thought I would give it a try.

It was VERY easy to use! You simply run the car with the AC system on. MAKE sure to hit the recirculate button on the HVAC(and have all the windows up! That way the aerosol product gets run thru the entire AC system. You do not want to stay inside the car either. It says to let the car run for 15 minutes. I ran mine for 20 minutes.

It works like a "rouch (bug) bomb"...

Afterwards the inside of the car will smell somewhat chemical - but by the next morning... the car smelt fine. Two days later I can not even smell the product.

Results? I think it did a great job(!) killing all the mold and bacteria growing inside the car and HVAC system. For very little money (eight euros) this product really worked well. I would recommend it to anyone who has a "smelly" car.

For any of you that have some "funky" AC smells... you might want to try this product. I am sure any of the detailing supply places that sell SONAX can get a hold of this product. Or just order it from Amazon of Germany.

Using the SONAX spray bomb... kind of ironic that the SONAX can has a picture of a 1er interior!

Can't really find it on eBay or Amazon here in the States. My car smelled like mold so I sprayed Lysol and now it doesn't smell like mold. But I'm sure this product is more specific to car than a Lysol.. only if we had it here

Thanks Vinney. It just needed some TLC when I bought it.

Yea Ken, that Einszett product would work too. You just need to pull off the pollen mirco filter and work the long hose/tube down to the Evaporator. Those types of products are foam like sprays, that soak the evap down and kill mold and bacteria in there.

The SONAX klima(AC) "bomb" - that I used was far and away too simple to use - and with good results too.

Dack,

It looks like Einszett has come out with a newer version of their klima cleaner that works like the Sonax. Starting at pic number four in the first post.

Yea... I remember seeing that detail thread. I would say that the Einszett products are really good too.

Very nice. I need to do this sometime soon.

One question. Did BMW ever make one of these? Or slap their logo on it and sell it? I could've swore I saw a member a few years ago get something like this straight from BMW.

I have not seen one, but Sonax makes most of BMW car cleaning stuff. So its certainly plausible.

I like how it's an E82 interior on the Sonax box/can.

My car STINKS when I turn the A/C off. I'd be afraid to see what's in my vents causing the smell. I'm going in to an indy shop Wednesday to get everything looked at, they are going to clean the whole system. Any clue how much this might be? Should I cancel and give this a try?

When the internal circulation is on it will suck in this aerosol product which has some kind of anti bacterial chemicals in it. That's supposed to kill whatever is in the vents and get rid of the smell.

Since your car stinks that bad... it's probably a good idea to take it to a shop. They will most likely use a professional product to clean the evap box out. They use an aerosol cleaner with a LONG plastic tube to get down into the evap box and they spray this foam product into the box to sanitise it. It will be much better than just using a product like we posted above. I think most shops would only charge an hour's labor rate to do this(at most). Unless they need to take the HVAC system apart - then things can get more expensive.

good luck,
Dackel

I just did this to both my wife's 328 and my 135. It is so simple I would definitely do it yourself. I used Kool-it from Amazon just because it was easy to find. It has a lemon sent. All you need to do is make sure your ac is on and it is set to the main vents in the dash. With the car off just feed the plastic tube down into the vent as far as it will go and empty the can into the vent It is an expanding foam and will almost come backup and out of the vents when the can is empty. Just wait 15 minutes and then run the ac on low for 5 minutes or so and your done. It seemed to work. I just have to see how long it lasts. It's cheap and easy to do again if needed.
